I have stood at Checkpoint Charlie, the cold gray line that once divided a city, a people, and a world. I could feel the weight of fear that once hung in the air. I can still remember watching the Wall come down, seeing people climb over concrete and barbed wire, breaking through decades of darkness with courage and hope. Pope John Paul II once said, “Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” Those words remind us that freedom is not an accident. It is a calling that demands courage, conscience, and sacrifice. As we remember the fall of the Berlin Wall, we honour both the pain and the promise. We mourn what was lost, and we celebrate what was gained. The Wall fell, but its lesson remains. Freedom can be delayed, but it cannot be denied.
