San Diego FC set the record points for an MLS expansion team and just smashed Portland Timbers 4-0 in the playoffs 😳 Even the owner Sir Mohamed Mansour didn’t imagine this was going to happen. “Honestly, I am so gratified and it’s something I’m forever going to be grateful for,” he said. He recalled how they only had seven players two and a half months before the season opener against the champions LA Galaxy. But in the end, everything turned out extremely well. “We didn’t know how things would turn out,” Mansour said. “This is really amazing. The football we play, the management, the perseverance of the players and the team is just beyond.” “You do good in your life, you get good back. This has been the motto of my life and I believe I am a very fortunate person.” “I am 77 years old. At this time of my life, I tell you what I am seeing here is the most gratifying thing for me. And it’s a thing that I will give all my support as long as I can.” “And I’m sure my son will and my grandchildren will to make San Diego proud because you’ve made me proud. You’ve made me happy.” Mansour is also investing heavily on Right to Dream academy in San Diego, which is giving elite training to the next generation of players. [via CBS 8 San Diego]

Family means everything to Darlington Nagbe. ♥️ He retired from the USMNT back in 2018 because he wanted to spend more time with his family. Last night, when his pro career came to an end, one of the first things he did was go and find his family in the stands. “They’re everything. They push me every single day to be a better player and a better person,” Nagbe said via the post-game interview. “My wife has been with me before all this started. So for her, she’s definitely feeling all the emotions.” “My kids, they don’t know me as anything else, just dad and this [being a soccer player]. So for them, it’s definitely a sad moment.” “But I’m definitely looking forward to spending time with them and being home more.” Nagbe has retired as four-time MLS Cup winner. He also won two Campeones Cups, one Leagues Cup, one U.S. Open Cup, and with the USMNT, he won the Gold Cup.

Women’s soccer to Atlanta? 👀 According to The Athletic, the NWSL will be awarding its 17th franchise to Atlanta with Arthur Blank ready to pay a record expansion fee of $165 million 💰 They are expected to debut sometime after the 2026 season and will play their home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the same stadium where Atlanta United and Atlanta Falcons play. Mercedes-Benz Stadium also hosted the USWNT game last year, where over 50,000 fans showed up. So support for women’s soccer is clearly there. It’s another step of Atlanta becoming a big presence in American soccer, with U.S. Soccer relocating its headquarters in that area. They are also building a $250 million national training center.

Former USMNT captain Michael Bradley just won his first trophy as a coach 👏🏾🏆 After helping New York Red Bulls II win the MLS NEXT PRO Cup final, he spoke about how good this feels 🗣️ “I’m so proud of the players, so proud of the group,” Bradley said via post-game interview. “It was a night where it didn’t come so easy. It would’ve been easy to feel sorry for ourselves and let that be that. But the group found a really good way to push and play on the edge and keep going.” “To come back and win like this, it’s so special.” “What did I tell them at half-time? I told them we have 50-55 minutes to keep playing and score goals. We worked on that every single day in training.” “We’ve worked on different ideas in terms of creating chances and scoring goals. So I said, ‘Just keep going. Even if the first half didn’t go our way, it’s no problem.’” “It’s a really, really fun group to work with. It’s a group of young, motivated guys who come in every day with a look in their eyes to do whatever it takes to get better and take the next step.” “As a young coach, I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Bradley’s side was down 2-0 after first half. They came back to 2-2 but conceded the third goal to Colorado Rapids 2. Then, they managed to equalize in the 81st minute and win the trophy via a penalty shootout. For the 38-year-old Bradley, this is a special feeling 🙌🏾

USMNT center-back Miles Robinson captained FC Cincinnati and put in a brilliant performance to help his team knock out rivals Columbus Crew. After the game, he celebrated with a sword, just like the one from Cincinnati crest 😂🗡️ What a game from him.
USMNT legend Eric Wynalda slams MLS for their current playoff format 😳 “MLS playoffs are here, and I’m confused. If you’re not confused then explain it to me,” he began. “This is such bullsh*t. I don’t understand the premise that we could have this many teams in the playoffs to start with. Nine teams from both sides made it in.” “Three game series? I can’t tell you how much I hate this. How in the hell can we sit here and complain about our players playing too many games and worrying about their health, only to get to the end of the season when the guys are beat up and the weather is gonna stop cooperating and we’re just gonna add a couple more games?” “This doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. I don’t care what anybody says.” “If you’re a team like LAFC, you have to wait 18 days for your next game. Just let that sink in.” “Bottom line is the playoffs stink. We don’t do it right and now we have to endure an 18-day break until some of these teams get to play again.” “And you wonder why the product suffers. 18 teams making the playoffs. Most other leagues don’t even have 18 teams or they only have 18 teams. It’s embarrassing.” [via Unleashed with Eric Wynalda show on GOLZ TV]
Former USMNT captain Michael Bradley was asked about his opinion on the current state of the team. “I think the current state of the men’s national team is that in June of next year, they’re going to play a home World Cup,” Bradley answered. “They have an opportunity, unlike the previous national team has ever had. Obviously in 1994, we hosted and that group of players were excited and motivated to capture the heart and attention of the country at the time.” “That was before MLS. Now with the way the game has grown, the attention is not just on the national team but also MLS. And you can watch every game from every league in Europe now in our country.” “So the game has grown in an incredible way. And they’ll have an opportunity next year to play a home World Cup and represent us, represent our football culture, and really have a chance to make everybody proud.” “I’ve been speaking to players a little bit. I know how motivated and excited they are. I’m excited to watch them and will be rooting for them at every step of the way.” Now coach of the New York Red Bulls II, Bradley has gotten them to MLS NEXT PRO Cup final. They’ll play the final tomorrow against Colorado Rapids 2 at home. [via CBS Sports]
