We examined key topics, from shaping the forces of change in higher education to developing metrics for societal impact. Congrats to HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development Prof. Tim K.-T. Cheng on receiving the 2025 ACM SIGDA Pioneering Achievement Award, a global recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA). 🏆 The award, presented by the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Design Automation (SIGDA) at the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) in Munich, Germany, honors individuals whose pioneering work has advanced design automation and shaped the future of technology. Prof. Cheng, who also serves as Director of the AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems Limited (ACCESS), is an internationally respected scholar in VLSI testing and design verification, electronic and photonic system design automation, computer vision, and medical image analysis. With over 500 publications, 5 books, and 20+ U.S. patents, his research has made far-reaching impact both in academia and industry. A Fellow of IEEE, the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Prof. Cheng continues to drive innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration that push the boundaries of semiconductor and AI system design. HKUST Hosts High-Level Forum on Generative AI and Establishes a Media Intelligence Research Center to Promote Deep Integration of AI and Cultural Creativity As the national 15th Five-Year Plan underscores the importance of implementing AI+ initiatives, HKUST hosted the "High-Level Forum on Generative AI (GenAI) Governance and Cultural Co-creation" yesterday, alongside the official launch of its Media Intelligence Research Centre (MIRC). The event was co-organized by HKUST’s Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) and the MIRC, bringing together over 30 government officials, scholars, and experts from media, business, and cultural sectors to share insights on developing a governance framework and fostering cultural co-creation for GenAI, collectively shaping a new future for governance landscape. The inauguration ceremony for the MIRC, held during the Forum, marks a significant milestone in HKUST’s pursuit of AI and media innovation. The Centre is committed to pioneering cutting-edge research and practices in AI and media innovation, focusing on areas such as governance, media, culture, education, and sustainable development, providing academic and technological support for the advancement of new quality productive forces. Serving as a prelude to HKUST's 35th anniversary celebrations, the forum featured three keynote speeches and two fireside dialogues. HKUST AI System Delivers Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis A research team at HKUST, led by Prof. CHEN Hao, has launched SmartPath, an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to significantly enhance the entire pathology workflow in cancer care. SmartPath provides integrated support for clinical diagnosis, subtyping, biomarker quantification, treatment response assessment, and prognostic follow-up across a wide spectrum of cancers, aiming to accelerate turnaround times and enhance the personalization of treatment plans. Developed from one of the largest and most diverse pathology datasets, SmartPath enables healthcare professionals with over 100 distinct clinical tasks. It notably diagnoses Hong Kong’s most prevalent cancers, such as lung, breast, colorectal, and gastric, with over 95% accuracy using a unified pathology foundation model. 🎤Prof. Chen Hao: “We are currently working with over a dozen top-tier hospitals in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, which has been fundamental to its rigorous validation. SmartPath isn't a static tool; it's a continuously evolving system that grows smarter with every clinical application, truly paving the way for a new standard in intelligent, personalized medicine.” The HKUST research team is now focused on expanding SmartPath’s capabilities to include additional cancer types, with an emphasis on developing more targeted therapeutic strategies and improved patient stratification. Congrats to our HKUST student team, AgriAccess, on winning 3rd Place at the APRU x Google Tech Policy Hackathon 2025!
