APPOFENIACS feeds on the anxieties many have about AI and deepfake technology to craft what is arguably the year’s most disturbingly relevant movie. Read our review of APPOFENIACS here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/22/…

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT trades in the franchise’s silly slasher antics for a Dexter-esque contemplative character study featuring a surprisingly endearing holiday romance. Read our review of the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT remake here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/22/…

VICIOUS squanders a promising premise and committed lead performance from Dakota Fanning with a dull, convoluted story that refuses to end. Read our review of the new horror movie from the writer/director of THE STRANGERS here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/22/…

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT may be the most pleasant surprise of the year. What could have easily been another silly entry in the series instead takes itself seriously, with a complex lead, endearing romance & clever spin on the original film’s concept. Fans of Dexter will love it

The Grabber goes full Freddy Krueger mode and Scott Derrickson proves he’s still a master of creating atmosphere in horror movies, but BLACK PHONE 2 stumbles in juggling far too many story elements. Read our full review of #BlackPhone2 here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/21/…

THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2 misses the mark again, with an extended 90 minute chase sequence for a plot & an ill-advised attempt to explain the origins of the Strangers extinguishing any investment we had in this misguided trilogy. Read our full review here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/21/…

Bloodier and funnier isn’t necessarily better. V/H/S/HALLOWEEN has two great, spooky shorts that delightfully embrace the Halloween season but misses the mark elsewhere. Read our full review of V/H/S/HALLOWEEN here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/20/…
V/H/S/HALLOWEEN is a mixed bag. Two of the 6 shorts are brilliant & creatively embrace the Halloween holiday. The short we keep cutting back too is quite funny and bloody but not particularly Halloween-y. The remaining 3 fall flat, although there’s plenty of carnage to feast on.
SHELBY OAKS is a polished, atmospheric debut from Chris Stuckmann. Blending found footage, traditional narrative & true crime mockumentary, the film intrigues with its mystery, but stumbles with routine scares & a muddled resolution. Read our review here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/19/…

THE CONJURING: LAST RITES is reportedly the final installment in the successful horror franchise. But does it come close to the excellent first two movies in the series? Read our review of #TheConjuringLastRites here: theholofiles.com/2025/09/06/…
The script for the ALIEN: ROMULUS sequel has been written, but @fedalvar will not direct.

#TheConjuringLastRites concludes (?) the franchise on a weak note. Only really feels like a finale in the last five minutes or so, which are admittedly touching. Otherwise, the film drags with unnecessary slow pacing and more dull family drama than horror. When there are “scares,” they are repetitive and lacking any semblance of the tension crafted by James Wan in the first two films. Definitely closer in quality than films like The Nun 2 and The Conjuring 3 in the franchise than the initial two, which have yet to be topped in the franchise. Lorraine says, “Something’s different this time.” In actuality, very little is different from recent outings.
