FRANKENSTEIN may be Guillermo del Toro’s magnum opus. A gothic fairy tale divided into two distinct, yet equally enchanting halves. It takes real craft to make this story feel fresh after innumerable adaptations and reinventions, but del Toro does so with flair and heart. The film takes liberties with Mary Shelley’s text that somehow enrich the timeless themes, rather than dilute their meaning. To see the words and story of Shelley, arguably one of greatest authors of all time, fuse with the singular style and poetry of filmmaking possessed by del Toro, arguably one of the best directors working today, creates an unforgettable viewing experience. Oscar Isaac brilliantly portrays the drive and descent into immorality of Victor Frankenstein. Jacob Elordi delivers his best performance to date, ushering in profound emotion in the film’s second half and evoking Rory Kinnear’s performance as The Creature from Penny Dreadful. David Bradley also shines in a small, yet pivotal and touching role. A cinematic triumph and a huge win for @netflix and @RealGDT.
