Germany just committed another act of national self harm by demolishing the cooling towers at the Gundremmingen Nuclear Power Station which was forced to shutdown under the Atomausstieg (Nuclear Phase-out) policy.
A new report by WePlanet and the Anthropocene Institute found that this policy has cost Germany 57 billion euros – around 1,390 euros per German household.
And has led to worse environmental outcomes thanks to the continued reliance on fossil fuels, primarily Russian Gas and dirty Lignite Coal.
🌡️Climate impact: additional CO2 emissions of 730 million tonnes – more than Germany's total emissions in 2024
🤒 Health impacts: 19,200 premature deaths and 177,000 serious illnesses
☣️Toxic pollutants: 4 tonnes of mercury, 2.5 tonnes of cadmium and 20 tonnes of lead
WePlanet joined Nuklearia to demonstrate against this act of national sabotage and to argue that there is still time to restart shutdown reactors and to recommit to nuclear power alongside other forms of clean energy.
The action included two giant papier-mâché heads of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and SPD party leader Lars Klingbeil. Friedrich Merz stands in front wearing a "Nuclear power? Yes, please!‘ sticker on top of his suit to signal that he has spoken out in favour of nuclear power and campaigned for it. He is ’tied up" with a rope because, in the coalition with the SPD, he has no way of campaigning for nuclear power without destroying the coalition. Klingbeil presses Merz's hand down on the box of explosives, symbolising precisely this pressure.
It's time for Germany to end the Atomausstieg and stop harming itself, Europe and our shared climate.
