Learned something new today: 1. About half of the warming from flying comes from contrails, not CO₂ 2. Just 3% of flights cause 80% of contrail-related warming 3. Rerouting those flights to avoid contrails would increase flight time by only ~1% Via @_HannahRitchie

Building this site on Replit was simple AND fun. I remember how excited I first was when AppEngine launched; Replit's infra takes that concept to whole new level. And with their agent, apps that used to be complicated are available to everyone. Strongly recommend.
The courage of the Global Sumud Flotilla is inspiring. I just learnt built and scaled their site + live tracker—using @Replit to get their message out.

As I watch live the illegal interception of these boats in international waters, I give my thanks to David and his colleagues. May this continued slaughter of innocents -- supported by far too many -- come to and end soon. globalsumudflotilla.org/live…
Greetings from the Global Sumud Flotilla as we make our final approach to Gaza ⛵️ Today, I am writing a very personal letter to you all — a letter about what it means to me to be Jewish on a mission that is set to arrive to the “Red Zone” during Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. I almost never write “as a Jew”. I share the exhaustion of being forced to put Jewish feelings first — when a genocide has been committed in the name of Zionist “national interest”, and when activists have been detained, tortured, and deported in the name of our “safety.” But today I felt compelled to write in that register — as one of the only Jews on this mission, which brings together over 500 people from more than 40 countries across the world. I believe that the timing of our flotilla is not coincidental. On the contrary, I believe it is a blessing that we are approaching interception at the onset of Yom Kippur — our annual day of atonement — which calls on us to reflect on our sins, and what can be done to repair them in the spirit of tikkun olam. How can we atone for what has been committed in our name? How can we seek forgiveness for sins that multiply by the hour, as bombs and bullets rain on Gaza? How could we possibly take seriously our mandate to “heal the world” when the State of Israel is so determined to destroy it? If there’s any part of the Torah that I still remember, it is this obligation it bestows upon us: "Justice, justice you shall pursue." How could we stand by while the State of Israel perverts this holy obligation, overseeing a holocaust of the Palestinian people? I joined this flotilla just like any other delegate — to defend humanity, before it is too late. But on Yom Kippur, I am reminded that I am also here because my Jewish heritage demands it. As a mere adolescent, my grandfather Jacques Adler (pictured) joined the Parisian resistance against the Nazis, putting his life on the line to sabotage their operations even as his friends and family were sent to their deaths in concentration camps. That is the tradition to which I am called, and the definition of “justice” that feels true to my Jewish identity — as the same genocidal rage that targeted my ancestors is now taken up by its principal victims. Yom Kippur is a day of fasting, a way to manifest our atonement in physical form. But for the last two years, the starving people of Gaza have had no choice but to forgo their daily bread. If Israeli forces intercept us on Yom Kippur, then let them see what true atonement looks like. Not fasting in comfort while starving their neighbors. Not praying in safety while dropping bombs over their heads. Atonement means action. So as the sun sets tonight, and the fasting begins, I hope that fellow Jews will join me in redefining their approach to atonement — together with silent prayer, and toward courageous action to put an end to this horrific genocide. G'mar chatima tova.

Google just released the AlphaEarth Foundations with 64 dimensions of satellite embeddings at 10-m resolution at the global scale! It is very interesting! 10 yrs ago, I joined a crazy sounding project to help mitigate mosquito-borne diseases. Did not foresee we'd be releasing mosquitoes out of drones to fight avian malaria. Huge props* to all my Debug colleagues. vox.com/down-to-earth/416699… * we also release some out of helicopters

The guards would shoot into crowds without warning. People were trampled in the panic, trying to escape or reach a ration cart. I saw a woman shot dead for picking up a piece of bread from the ground. - Simon Wiesenthal (from The Sunflower, recalling the Lviv Ghetto, 1941–1942)
This morning, a terrifying and indescribable scene unfolded at the desalination station in Khan Younis. Masses of people surged toward the flour trucks, driven by a relentless hunger. I rushed there, hoping to get a bag of flour to feed my family, but what I witnessed was beyond imagination. Bodies were crushed beneath the wheels of the trucks, and people were fighting desperately over sacks of flour—battling not out of greed, but sheer need. On top of it all, the occupation forces opened fire on us without mercy, wounding many in the chaos. Our life in Gaza has become like a jungle, where mercy is absent and the strong prey on the weak. Gaza is no longer just a besieged city—it is a devastated one, gasping for breath and struggling to survive.

NYU canceled a speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she was going to discuss the genocide in Gaza. A slide about the death toll in Gaza “could be perceived as antisemitic":

This is one of the groups asking 'will you hide me' when the fascists come knocking to disappear them. First they came for the anti genocide people.... guess we'll see who's left to help you later?
Foreign national students are exploiting their visas and fully funded scholarships to incite harm against Jews and align with terror organizations like Hamas. StopAntisemitism will not stand idly by as this continues. StopAntisemitism needs YOUR help to hold these individuals accountable - scroll, read, and ACT! 1. Grainne Malone - Notre Dame Irish foreign national and Notre Dame student Grainne Malone, here on a student visa, was arrested at the school’s pro-terror encampment in May 2024 and charged with trespassing. Despite violating campus policies and engaging in extremist activity, she remains a recipient of the prestigious Hesburgh-Yusko Program, which funds her education. With her graduation just months away, serious questions must be raised about how foreign students are abusing their visas to spread mauhem on American campuses. REPORT GRAINNE MALONE HERE: ice.gov/webform/ice-tip-form 2. Mohammed Mustafa - Ohio State University Ohio State University student Mohammad Mustafa, a foreign national from Nablus, was arrested in April 2024 for participating in pro-terror riots. Despite his actions, his visa status remains unchanged. In July 2024, he publicly expressed support for Hamas and Palestinian terrorism, stating, "May Allah bring victory to our resistance, accept our martyrs, and protect the people of Palestine." By February 2025, Mustafa escalated his rhetoric, calling for the violent destruction of Israel and vowing to "fight for liberation from the river to the sea." The continued presence of individuals like Mustafa on U.S. campuses is a direct threat to Jewish students and national security. REPORT MOHAMMED MUSTAFA HERE: ice.gov/webform/ice-tip-form 3. Abdulrahman Atassi - Notre Dame Foreign national Abdulrahman Atassi, a Notre Dame student set to graduate in May 2025, was arrested in May 2024 at the school’s pro-terror encampment and charged with trespassing. Despite his arrest, Atassi remains in the United States on a student visa. Attasi's continued presence raises serious concerns - why has his visa not been revoked? Authorities must take action to prevent the abuse of student visas for extremist agendas. REPORT ABDULRAHMAN ATASSI HERE: ice.gov/webform/ice-tip-form

I'm old enough to remember when Republicans said they believed in freedom of speech.
BREAKING: Last night, agents from the Department of “Homeland Security” abducted Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student activist and recent Columbia University graduate, from his place of residence. He is currently being held in ICE detention. shorturl.at/13cT9

Interesting study on ozone depletion via satellites Note the post below is misleading: Compared to CFC's, aluminum oxide nanoparticles are significantly less harmful to the ozone, and we are emitting <500 tons/year (vs 1M tons at peak CFC usage) Expect minor impacts over time
Turns out Musk's starlink satellites are raining out of orbit at a rate of 120 per month and each one produces 30 kilograms of aluminum oxide which eats away at the ozone layer and these oxides have increased 8 fold in the atmosphere since 2016👍

Sometimes the best approach is just releasing mosquitoes from a helicopter. Avian malaria continues to decimate local bird populations in Hawaii ... excited to see us expand these mosquito releases from Maui to Kauai. piped.video/watch?v=-htemZZi…

We did it! We tested 300 Bay Area foods for plastic chemicals. We found some interesting surprises. Top 5 findings in our test results: 1. Our tests found plastic chemicals in 86% of all foods, with phthalates in 73% of the tested products and bisphenols in 22%. It's everywhere. 2. We detected phthalates in most baby foods and prenatal vitamins. 3. Hot foods which spend 45 minutes in takeout containers have 34% higher levels of plastic chemicals than the same dishes tested directly from the restaurant. 4. The 1950s Army rations we tested contained surprisingly high levels of plastic chemicals. 5. Almost every single one of the foods we tested are within both US FDA and EU EFSA regulations. Check out our full results below.
I'm going to re-run all these tests on food we eat in California. Also going to test for other plastic chemicals. Let me know what foods we should test and suggestions for methodology.

This is a very conservative estimate. It assumes that: - The dead have been counted (many people are under the rubble, never to be taken to a grave) - Palestinian children under 5 are just as likely as adults to die from Israeli violence (they're actually much more vulnerable)

Another fascinating interview by Chotiner. This one showcases the mental gymnastics that many people go through to justify the horrors being carried out in their name.
New Interview: I talked to the novelist and commentator Howard Jacobson about his argument that sustained media coverage of children being killed in Gaza is functioning as a new “blood libel” against Jews. newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/r…
The future of space travel. Amazing. Congratulations to all the engineers at SpaceX.
Starship’s fifth flight test lifted off with our most ambitious test objectives yet as we work to demonstrate techniques fundamental to Starship and Super Heavy’s fully and rapidly reusable design. And on our first try, Mechazilla caught the booster → spacex.com/launches/mission/…
Testing out the new @Replit agent; very impressive! So far built a few different prototype apps that were on my list, and saving a ton of boilerplate time. Working now on something for my HOA to download/visualize aggregate water meter stats from aquahawk .. need more quota!

Coolest hobby project I've seen in a long time.
Enjoying the fruits of my labor now that I finished my 12-legged 'Carpentopod' table project. See decarpentier.nl/carpentopod for project info, or see it live at @EHVMMF this 13 & 14 Sept.
