We need to start making fun of SF tech people. Their "engineer" LARP has gone too far. All software has become unusable because of their inability to program
CPU usage before and after closing @discord app Actual malware 😂
Gamer goes crazy and starts going through my posts trying to get gotchas. Good luck, man. One day you should stop pretending to be a game developer to win arguments though

Do you know about overdraw?

Been thinking about it for a while, but I might make a youtube video or something about how games work, simplified for non-professionals with no intetion of getting into making games. Kinda like "how cameras work, for movie fans." IDK

Gamers should never have been taught what a game engine is

My money is on the game engine, and it seems that doesn't support voices overs in a very fundamental level, they probably never expected they'll be using this limited 3ds Engine for so long but alas we are here, peak game development btw.

"But Ian, some games *are* similar!" That's why they use off-the-shelf, or modified custom engines that are made specifically for games of that genre. And that's why Unity and Unreal aren't the best solution for everything, since they can only be so flexible.

Some games don't even have static models (Minecraft), and some games are practically all static (walking sims). This means they have specific challenges to creating the right data structures to send to the GPU, and therefore have to be fundamentally different.

If you, for example, have a game world that's just one medium-sized unmoving city, your models don't need any special data apart from where the vertices are located and their materials! Which makes rendering significantly easier and cheaper, than if we, e.g, included destruction.

This is counter-intuitive, because why would you not just standardize it, right? You could have one "concept" of a model and reuse it in every engine! This causes problems for games with smaller and/or larger scopes than the one the concept was created for.

A final-ish thing I'll say about the Pokemon thing -- and this took me a while to understand as well, when I was a beginner, -- all games are not made in the same way. Even the concept of a "3D Model" is different between engines, and they all handle it differently.

another 5000 years of gamer discourse about "big model = low fps" but this time my work is involved I guess lol

When things like this inevitably flop the common indie response is to blame the Steam algo, culture war bullshit, and Xitter promoting it to the wrong audience. It's sad, because the talent is there, but constructive feedback is banned in indie spaces.

Too many people on my timeline complaining about Windows 11 logins. Not nearly enough complaining about CMake. CMake might be the single most rage inducing software I have ever used in my life. It is inexcusably terrible and awful with zero redeeming qualities.

Heavily inspired by Tramway SDK, but not going as hard on the retro aesthetics. racenis.github.io/tram-sdk/i…
Considering starting a focused open source engine. What platforms are people interested in? Want something like an even leaner OGRE3D. If you don't care, have a seal video
