Mary is seen as the model disciple, the Ark of the New Covenant, the Queen (in a Davidic sense in which the mother of the king was seen as the queen). Mary's significance to the Christian faith is in her perfect obedience to God's plan, and her being the vessel through which we receive Our Lord. Catholics honor Mary in the same way we would honor a queen, but worship belongs to God alone. Mary just has a huge role in the way God chose to meditate salvation to mankind.
