The story of my life so far in WordPress this morning. 🫠 I've lost count of how many different plugins have something similar to this in their changelogs across all my client sites. And immediately after updating, the WordPress Admin area becomes utter garbage. 😭

This is too good. Founder of GEO platform is shutting it down because he says, "There is no such thing as GEO strategy" separate from brand building. More need to hear this. Share away. :)
🆕 Founder of AI visibility tracking tool Lorelight is now shutting down the tool and said "there's no such thing as "GEO strategy" separate from brand building. For the large majority of brands at least." in LinkedIn post linkedin.com/posts/benjaminh… and also wrote a long blog post about it growwithless.com/shutting-do…

A plumber drove past me with a Hotmail address on the side of his van. For years, that would’ve been a red flag. Now, in an age of AI-generated everything, it might be the most trustworthy thing I’ve seen all month. jonoalderson.com/conjecture/…

Show me an SEO tool using AI to help people create original ideas and value. Show me an SEO tool using AI to help people get better at differentiating their businesses and propositions. Show me anything except yet another SEO tool pushing people to drown the internet with slop.
3 million websites now publishing AI slop on autopilot. How is that good? How is it valuable? How does it help you to compete with and differentiate from the rest of the market? Urgh. There's a reason that I pushed back against this kind of crap when I was at Yoast.

Asked Atlas to center a Div in Webflow. Took the AI 25 minutes and two take overs but it finally managed to set the body to display flex. (Should have done it on the red div parent not the body) It also changed a bunch more things like a junior clicking around… I successfully burned a forest for this.

The WPE vs #WordPress lawsuit is still so crazy. Like here is a recent appeal to keep communications sealed regarding likely financial deals to endorse someone or a company on wordpress dot org. Don't forget that up until all of this happened, WordPress dot org was assumed to be owned by the non-profit WordPress Foundation (in fact, the founding documents for the Foundation list its website as WordPress dot org, which it seems to have never been). But it's just owned by Matt personally. I asked the question before, and I'll ask it again - what were all those people contributing free time, translations, and verbiage etc. to on WordPress dot org over the years, if it wasn't in the Foundation? Just Matt? I am no lawyer, but I actually think that's a violation of California labour code, as it's effectively unpaid labour at that point. For everyone who volunteered code, text, etc., they did it for free for apparently a private entity since it wasn't the Foundation. I really wish WPE had listed the WPF as part of the lawsuit, as someone really needs to bust this shell game apart. That fact that WPE is pushing hard for an actual organization chart / position list of over 100 people (which Automattic / Matt are resisting as apparently telling them who does what in the company is too onerous for them) makes me think they are using that as a means to figure out what's going on internally, and what are the relationships between the WPF, Matt, and Automattic. storage.courtlistener.com/re…

Google's position on publicly indexable URLs: consciously and deliberately manage their crawling and indexing directives. Like it's 1996.
Google's position on LLMS.txt: noindex it.

I’ve been investigating dead websites for years. Same symptoms every time - bloated code, missing structure, too many dependencies and not enough care. It’s not murder. It’s neglect. And it’s everywhere. jonoalderson.com/misc/the-de…

Subtle distinction between: "building apps for AI to use" and "becoming data vendor/supplier to AI" .... ChatGPT "hates" your app. If they could skip using it and directly provide information, they would. The "chat to Apps" is a bandaid solution. At some point the "app"will not exist. You'll create an MCP (and API) that LLMs will use. No app. No interface. No UI. Nothing to download. No installation. For example, with e-commerce integration (Shopify/Stripe), soon, how many stores will see drop in visits without drop in revenue (hopefully)?
i love anish so i will respectfully disagree here. when jobs launched the app store, there was no general reasoning underneath iphone. here, chatgpt already has world knowledge, context, & intelligence baked in. every long tail app is already baked into gpt or better yet it can simply generate it. so with this in mind most valuable “apps” will just be thin wrappers around missing data. if you’re zillow, that’s housing data. if you’re canva, maybe that’s design templates (although openai can likely make posters already). it’s not really an application play.. it’s a data play. & giving your data to openai is effectively deepening their moat, since every app built here trains their system to do what you do. users stay in chatgpt. your edge decays over time. in essence devs are feeding openai context it doesn’t yet have, which then increases openai’s moat. the more useful their plugin, the faster their own differentiation evaporates. we’ll see how this plays out but i think it’s imho it’s not yet equivalent to app store even with 100x distribution.

Good to see llms.txt getting spanked. Tip - I noticed some LLMs fanning out queries to my HTML sitemap, so I just made my HTML sitemap more contextual for LLMs taking shortcuts.
JohnMu said if you see your llms.txt in the SERPs, you might want to noindex it. That file will compete with your regular content in the search results.
