No one knows how many users @obsdmd has I think it's around 5-10 million people but I'm not sure? Anyone can download the app and start using it without creating an account or talking to anyone, and there are no analytics built-in 🤷‍♂️

it's my favorite app however only problem currently is that my note with 70,000+ words crashes frequently. although not much is omitted or deleted besides the last one or two words. i also don't use any plugins (i have community plugins turned off).
open a bug on the forum, ideally with a dummy file we can use to reproduce the issue

Just curious: you guys do any sort of telemetry? If not... can be amazing and a good option, right now, I'm no Joplin.

Nope, no telemetry, but the mobile app stores do have some data

Can you not just track the amount of updates served when you push an update?
GitHub counts this stat, but it doesn't include mobile, people who turn of auto-update, and doesn't really measure active users

If @obsdmd has a million fans, then I am one of them. If @obsdmd has ten fans, then I am one of them. If @obsdmd has only one fan then that is me. If @obsdmd has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against @obsdmd, then I am against the world.

Same with most of the @OSSCapital portfolio. I think we have around 200M+ users across all the core projects.

do you not track the number of downloads from the website?

I'm using it!

Obsidian is one app that I would trust to collect analytics on me. But that trust partly comes from it not collecting analytics on me

absolute chads. I haven’t used a more useful piece of software—esp now that it has built in browser.

how do you get user insight into what's working vs. not working? or do you just guess / communicate with users?

Makes sennse. You have no need to know the size of the user base as you won't ever have to answer this question from an investor

You could also count/log the requests to the update check server, as each check has an instance id in the url. I think having basic proof of your install base volume is useful for a commercial app because one day you will get an offer to buy it.

You are not even tracking the number of downloads?

Obsidian’s user count is Schrödinger’s stat—real and unknowable at the same time.
