NZGDC POKEMON STORY: So during my Nintendo Game Design presentation at the NZGDC (on youtube now!) there is a particular point where I talk about the great lengths Nintendo will go to to polish a game!
After the presentation a game dev came up to me and said "If Nintendo are so great with polish, then why are Pokemon games so crap and unpolished??"
I had to explain to this dev for 5 mins that Nintendo doesn't have sole ownership of Pokemon, which is why the quality of Pokemon games are inherently lower than all of Nintendo's other IP.
If they did have full ownership of the IP, the Pokemon games would be completely different, they wouldn't be rushed like they are, they wouldn't look like PS2 games, there would be more innovations, and they would probably be GTA-level events due to not being milked to death.
If game devs aren't even aware of this, then I imagine there are millions out there that still don't understand that the Pokemon IP has shared ownership between Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc.
Nintendo doesn't call the shots with Pokemon, they only publish and distribute the games.
