2500 Years of Western Intellectual History all just to reinvent Confucianism…
I think as the west loses Christianity we are going to reinvent Confucianism. We’ve now reached the “arguing about prescribed mourning periods” stage.

Maybe the core meme should have been "things should remain somewhat stable" as opposed to "be kind" all along - several millennia of cultural evolution

The West is individualistic because of Aristotle; in fact, Plato and Socrates thought more about a Platonic communist system.

Uh yeah, Socrates: “the unexamined life is not worth living” The Apology 38a, not individualistic at all

I adopted it many years ago. Life changing and positive. David Hume is close to confucianism.
Or maybe just the Talmud. Perhaps western civilisation really is Jewish.

China has a far longer history of atheism. Perhaps it is reasonable to look to them to understand what and how an unbelieving society can function.

Even some people proposed anarchism... In the Ming Dynasty, some people developed idealism and even criticized the imperial power... But after the Tatars ruled China, they further strengthened the traditional Confucian ideology in order to reduce resistance.

Social cohesion and ritual is a pretty baseline thing for most civilizations. We have a better chance of reinventing the Talmud 2.0 then adopting confusionism

Argentina is a homogeneous country, yet it has still experienced decades of poverty and institutional crises. Similarly, Korea split in two, even though it is the same people. What makes a nation cohesive is a strong national culture, not just the homogeneity of its society.

Early Missionaries like Matteo Ricci correctly identified Confucius as the Aristotle of the East. He was more than that, both historian, philosopher and moral idealist. Much to say for Shang Yang too.

Confucianism and Trad Catholicism are already synthesized thanks to Matteo Ricci and the Jesuits. Just need to read up on it and visit the various archives. Fascinating stuff

Have you read the Liji? Rujia is not just about vague social harmony and family values, that would be the Scottish enlightenment

Duke of She: “In my village there is a man who, when his father joined a grooming gang, reported him to the authorities.” Confucius replied: “Among my people, uprightness is different. The father covers for the son, and the son covers for the father. Uprightness lies within it.”
