UN stuck in outdated power structure
The U.N. Security Council remains constrained by the power structures that don't reflect today's global reality, according to Prof. Jia Lieying, head of China's first university-based U.N. research institute.
Countries and regional organizations such as India, Germany, Japan, and the African Union have risen significantly. But none have permanent seats on the Security Council. However, reforming this system remains a difficult undertaking, Jia explains, because any change must be agreed to by all the five permanent members. That means a single veto can block everything indefinitely.
