Jhulan Goswami broke down in tears last night as the Indian women’s team lifted the World Cup.
A tall, middle-class girl from Chakdaha, Bengal, she grew to become one of the fastest and greatest bowlers the sport has ever seen. With 255 ODI wickets, a world record, she stands so far ahead that the second-highest isn’t even at 200. She carried the flag for women’s cricket in an era when not many were watching.
A biopic on her life, starring Anushka Sharma, finished shooting in 2022 but never saw the light of day. It was not released after widespread outrage following the teaser, as viewers felt Anushka Sharma neither looked nor sounded anything like Jhulan.
