A long, long time ago I can still remember how those CVEs would make me sigh. Each vuln report would come my way, A flaw to patch without delay, And pray the hackers wouldn’t pry. But then the system started creaking, Duplicates and errors sneaking. MITRE’s lists grew thin, No trust in what’s within. The rush to score, the race to name, Left chaos in the vuln game’s fame. The cracks were showing, none to blame, The day that CVE died. So bye, bye, Miss CVE, oh my, my, Patched the flaws, but the system ran dry. Them good ol’ coders waved their standards high, Singing, “This’ll be the day that it dies, This’ll be the day that it dies.” Did you read the vuln report’s prose, Where CVSS scores would overdose? The metrics skewed, they’d never align. And do you trust the NVD’s take, When half the data’s a mistake, And vendors lag to fix in time? Well, I know that you’re in love with speed, Assign a number, plant the seed. But scores were gamed, oh man, Exploits slipped through the plan. The pentesters were out of luck, No clear path forward, systems stuck. The database just ran amok, The day that CVE died. We were singing, bye, bye, Miss CVE, oh my, my, Patched the flaws, but the system ran dry. Them good ol’ coders waved their standards high, Singing, “This’ll be the day that it dies, This’ll be the day that it dies.” Now for decades, we leaned on thee, A common tongue for vulns, CVE. But cracks in trust began to show. The CNAs, they multiplied, Assigned IDs with little pride, And conflicts left the truth to blow. Oh, and while the board was looking down, The funding dried up, no one’s around. The process slowed to crawl, No updates came at all. And while exploits flew in real-time streams, The backlog crushed our cyber dreams. We lost the faith in naming schemes, The day that CVE died. We were singing, bye, bye, Miss CVE, oh my, my, Patched the flaws, but the system ran dry. Them good ol’ coders waved their standards high, Singing, “This’ll be the day that it dies, This’ll be the day that it dies.” The community, it tried to mend, With open source and new trends. But silos grew, no one agreed. Blockchain ledgers, AI scans, Decentralized, no single plan, Yet none could meet the global need. And in the end, the world moved on, New frameworks rose, the old ones gone. No central list to guide, CVE just up and died. The coders sighed, the hackers grinned, A chapter closed, the wheel would spin. We mourned the loss, but raised a hymn, The day that CVE died. And we were singing, bye, bye, Miss CVE, oh my, my, Patched the flaws, but the system ran dry. Them good ol’ coders waved their standards high, Singing, “This’ll be the day that it dies, This’ll be the day that it dies.” We sang, bye, bye, Miss CVE, oh my, my, Patched the flaws, but the system ran dry. Them good ol’ coders waved their standards high, Singing, “This’ll be the day that it dies.”

The recording of the k-rad hacker history panel at @defcon 32 that I moderated is now online: tinyurl.com/33uzk3w9 My favorite part of this was getting to thank Emmanuel Goldstein for never selling out while we were backstage.
Thanks @r00t0wns for this huge sticker haul. Can’t wait to hand these out to my tech ethics class…
