December 8, 2012 deep inside Afghanistan. A U.S. Navy SEAL team was sent to rescue Dr. Dilip Joseph, an American hostage held by the Taliban.
As the assault began, the lead SEAL, Nicolas Cheque, was mortally wounded breaching the door. Without hesitation, Chief Petty Officer Edward Byers stormed inside facing a room full of armed fighters. He eliminated one enemy, tackled another, and then threw himself over the hostage, shielding him with his own body while holding down a gunman with his bare hands. When the fight was over, the hostage was alive. His teammate was not. Byers bleeding and breathless used his medical training to try and save his fallen brother until evacuation. For his extraordinary courage, Edward Byers Jr. received the Medal of Honor becoming one of the few living SEALs ever to do so.
