Thank you to industry leaders, technology companies and post-secondary for joining us to launch the $50 million industry-funded Tailings Technology Challenge, a big step forward in cleaning up Alberta’s tailings ponds and reclaiming lands. Industry already invests millions each year to manage oil sands mine water, but this will help spur on and scale up new technology and potential solutions in this space. Thank you to Kendall Dilling, President of the Pathways Alliance and Justin Reimer, CEO of ERA for your partnership in this initiative, and also, a big thank you to Dr. Anders Nygren, Dean of the Schulich School of Engineering for hosting us! We will continue working to protect Alberta’s environment for years to come by supporting new and better ways for responsible reclamation and reducing oil sands mine water. alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=9…

I had the pleasure of joining Justin Reimer, CEO of @ERAlberta_ , and our gracious host Franz X. Spachtholz, President and CEO of Baymag Inc, world leaders in magnesium oxide, to announce $72 million from ERA to help industry remain competitive, efficient and create good paying jobs. This funding helps forestry, energy, agriculture, heavy manufacturing and other major industries increase responsible production and remain world leaders in their sectors. By supporting all kinds of made-in-Alberta technology, we’re strengthening our economy and funding technologies that also help us protect water, land and air quality. It was also great to tour the state-of-the-art Baymag facility today and see the amazing work they are doing on everything from critical minerals, battery storage and recycling, and water treatment in the oil sands .

It was great to join a few panels on Wednesday to promote Alberta’s responsible energy production and developing of new technologies. I had the chance to join a panel with Emissions Reduction Alberta about building on Alberta’s successes in reducing emissions, which was followed by a lively fire-side chat with ERA Chair, Kelly Ogle. It was also great to speak at a panel with leaders from around the world on advancing CCUS in the cement sector. Thank you so much for having me!

Yesterday, MLA @NathanCooperAB and I joined Justin Reimer with Emissions Reduction Alberta, E3 Lithium’s President and CEO Christopher Doornbos, and councillors for Mountain View County to announce ERA’s $5 million investment in E3 through the industry-funded TIER program, to help E3 commercialize their technology. Demand for critical minerals, including lithium, is rising around the world. E3 extracts this critical mineral from oil and gas wastewater. While some may think of EVs, this mineral is also used in everything from smartphones and alarm systems to pacemakers and other medical devices. E3 alone has 5X more lithium resources than the rest of Canada combined…. And their processes use both recycled water and a far smaller environmental footprint than many other types of production. While the majority of lithium is still coming from China, Alberta has the potential to become one of the largest lithium producers in the world!

Our industry-funded TIER program is one that has long been a leader in driving new technology and innovation - while also creating jobs, lowering energy costs for small and medium sized businesses, reducing emissions and keeping the economy strong. These projects are entirely funded by industry as they work to maintain Alberta’s reputation as Canada’s energy and innovation capital.

Today alongside Justin Reimer, CEO at @ERAlberta_, and our gracious host, Scott Treadwell, President of SixRing Inc., we announced more than $44 million for over 21 amazing projects to help small and medium businesses reduce emissions and lower energy costs. If successful, these projects could contribute more than $238 million into Alberta’s GDP by 2027 while reducing 206,000 tonnes of emissions per year and 5 million tonnes by 2050. We will continue to lead the way on investing in technology and reducing emissions…all while meeting rising national and global demand for energy for years to come.
Thanks for joining us Deborah
