Three thoughts after the BBC chairman’s letter to MPs. 1. I can’t begin to understand why it took the BBC board so long to write it. 2. The BBC News response to the Trump edit was seriously misguided. 3. I don’t think Tim Davie needed to resign: the faults sat elsewhere.

'It's took big a job for one individual to do' Roger Mosey, former head of BBC News, spoke to #BBCBreakfast about the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness, after criticism that Panorama misled viewers by editing a speech by Donald Trump bbc.co.uk/news/live/cd9kqz1y…
I’m very sad that Tim Davie has resigned. He was a great colleague in my BBC days, and as DG he’s focused the organisation on its digital future. What this shows is that the job is becoming impossible if every failing everywhere lands on the DG.

‘It isn’t news: it’s opinion and polemic.’ Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy tells @Lewis_Goodall she is ‘disappointed’ in OFCOM for not taking action on politicians presenting the news.

‘I haven’t found anyone who thinks that editing is defensible.’ Ex-BBC Editorial Director Roger Mosey tells @lewis_goodall he expects the corporation will have to ‘fess up’ about its editing of Donald Trump’s January 6th speech.

I've written about the BBC's Prescott report, and 'great genes' too! markurban.substack.com/p/lib…
A periodic reminder that this is only possible on channels which are not behind a paywall. If the BBC went on to subscription, these national moments would evaporate.
Massive record audience of 11m for The Celebrity Traitors finale last night. Just look at these numbers. Nothing on TV comes close right now.
The latest row over alleged #BBC bias needs a full public response from the corporation. My piece for @thetimes. thetimes.com/article/c0f5403…

Looks like extraordinary cowardice. "...following pressure from the Chinese state and a separate defamation law suit against the university, Sheffield Hallam decided not to publish a final piece of research by Prof Murphy and her team into forced labour." bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq50…

Staff on train described as heroic: “Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives” - Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy. 2
Well, #CelebrityTraitors has been a triumph for the BBC. There’s still life in linear television; and we share something of value when millions of people watch a show together, rather than audiences fragmenting behind a paywall.

I greatly enjoyed @Tanika_Gupta’s reworking of #Hedda for @OrangeTreeThtr. Subtly written, and engrossing. The Orange Tree is on a terrific run of productions.

Keeping the BBC independent - and properly funded - is a big task ahead. Some good thoughts from my former colleague Pat Younge and British Broadcasting Challenge. patyounge.substack.com/p/its…
I’m joining the applause for season 3 of Blue Lights. Brilliantly written, acted, directed and filmed - and so much deeper in its thought and emotion than most TV drama. It keeps getting better.
