10x Elon said the next version of FSD— presumed to be version 14— will have 10x the number of parameters as version 13 (including the version 13 builds used in Robotaxi). What does this mean? Architecturally, a neural network is made up of layers, and those layers contain nodes (also called neurons). Each node in one layer is (typically) connected to every node in the next layer. These connections have numerical values called weights, which determine how influential each connection is. Each node also has a bias, which adjusts the node’s output independently of its inputs. The parameters in a neural network are the weights plus the biases. So when Elon says version 14 has 10x more parameters, he means the total number of weights and biases has increased— implying a larger, more expressive model. In a sense it means the model is more nuanced, can contain more "decision" points. In general a bigger model is better, but also requires more compute. More compute to train and more compute to run (inference). Deciding that version 14 will be 10x bigger than version 13 implies the team is confident they can run it on HW4 Tesla's. In other words, they know the performance can be achieved for inference. Part 2 (x.com/pbeisel/status/1901989…) of this series does a good job explaining this.

The UK Online Safety act is out and causing havoc. The privacy and self doxing laws always claim they are about protecting children, but what it’s really doing is building a database of users personal info in a country that wants to arrest you for online speech. The Tea app shows this info will be leaked. Not if, but when. It’s just a bad idea.

South Korea's shocking population pyramid shows that demographic collapse is well underway. An added headwind in Korea (and China, too) is that there are a lot fewer women than men in the crucial 25-35 age range, the result of sex-selective abortions a generation ago.
Here's the female side of the South Korean age pyramid, in dark blue, overlaid on the male side. For the 25-35 age group, there are approximately 115 men for every 100 women.
As part of a criminal investigation, an activist French prosecutor is requesting information on X’s proprietary algorithm and has classified X as an “organized crime group.” Democratic governments should allow all voices to be heard, not silence speech they dislike. The United States will defend the free speech of all Americans against acts of foreign censorship.
French authorities have launched a politically-motivated criminal investigation into X over the alleged manipulation of its algorithm and alleged “fraudulent data extraction.” X categorically denies these allegations. This investigation, instigated by French politician Eric Bothorel, egregiously undermines X’s fundamental right to due process and threatens our users’ rights to privacy and free speech. Mr Bothorel has accused X of manipulating its algorithm for “foreign interference” purposes, an allegation which is completely false. French authorities have requested access to X’s recommendation algorithm and real-time data about all user posts on the platform in order for several “experts” to analyze the data and purportedly “uncover the truth” about the operation of the X platform. One of those “experts” is David Chavalarias, who spearheads the “Escape X” campaign. Formerly known as “HelloQuitteX”, the campaign is dedicated to encouraging X users to leave the platform. A second “expert,” Maziyar Panahi, has previously participated in research projects with David Chavalarias that demonstrate open hostility towards X. The involvement of these individuals raises serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness, and political motivations of the investigation, to put it charitably. A predetermined outcome is not a fair one. What’s more, French authorities have classified X as an “organized gang” for the purpose of the investigation. This characterization, which is usually reserved for drug cartels or mafia groups, enables the French police to deploy extensive investigative powers under French law, including wiretapping the personal devices of X employees. X remains in the dark as to the specific allegations made against the platform. However, based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech. For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities’ demands, as we have a legal right to do. This is not a decision that X takes lightly. However, in this case, the facts speak for themselves. X is committed to defending its fundamental rights, protecting user data and resisting political censorship.
We are deeply concerned by the findings in the House Judiciary Committee's interim report, led by Chairman @Jim_Jordan, exposing the EU's misuse of the Digital Services Act (DSA) as a tool for censorship. The report reveals how the DSA pressures tech companies to alter their global content moderation policies, effectively exporting EU standards to the US and beyond – threatening free speech worldwide. The classification of relatively benign political statements – such as “We need to take back our country” – as “illegal hate speech,” raises serious questions about the extent of its application. The DSA’s heavy hand targets humor, satire, and personal opinions on issues concerning immigration and the environment. The apparent one-sided enforcement of the DSA involves third parties like "trusted flaggers" and “fact checkers” with conflicts of interest and likely political  biases, which can stifle discourse, democratic debate, and the exchange of diverse ideas across the globe. At X, we are committed to safeguarding freedom of expression, and resisting regulatory overreach that imposes censorship on platforms and our users. Read the report here: judiciary.house.gov/sites/ev…
