Tom Paine's Common Sense is one of the three or four most important documents of the American Revolution and it percolates with contempt for aristocracy and aristocrats. Today's billionaires are much, much more powerful and anti-democratic than 18th century aristocrats.

No 18th century aristocrat claimed slavery was good. They said it was an unfortunate evil on its way to extinction.

by the time he wrote ‘Agrarian Justice,’ Paine was arguably a proto-socialist, though that terminology hadn’t been coined yet
