One way I do think Mamdani is significant is that he represents a changing of the guard from a progressive dispensation centered on the civil rights movement and the Holocaust to one now more focused on third-world-leftist liberation tropes with an accompanying transition in power from Jewish and black leaders to foreign-born or 1st-gen ‘global citizen’ elites. Progressive white voters seem to approve of this because it has some novelty, successfully launders some of their interests, is seen as ideologically legitimizing, and can be leveraged for the sorts of pageantry libs find exciting. Now with that said, the ideology does seem to be an imperfect fit. The meta irony is that many immigrants are coming here from places where the empiric results of decades of leftist revolution have been chaos, misery, and squalor. And so I wonder, once you get past the symbolism of a foreign born elite like Mamdani being elected mayor, how much organic enthusiasm there will be among most immigrants for his policy portfolio, never mind the fact that many immigrants are regressive chuds who have close to zero affinity for the lib cultural war orthodoxies that Mamdani endorses.
