Estate workers wearing a wool blanket called 'Kampali Porvai' in Tamil - I think it is called Kambili Kabaya in Sinhala. - There was a ragala shop. We call it "Kambali Kade".

What a picture! It shows how difficult their lives have become. The difference between the cold tea pickers in the bungalow and barefoot! I always know that they are exploited to the max. I can't be proud of that.
They gave the estate a cash advance of Rs. 30/- for the purchase of the blanket and it was reduced in 3 monthly installments. It was called "Kumbli Atthikaram", which means blanket advance. That was in the early 70s, between 1972 - 1975. During the time I worked in the estates, in the year 1967, the Kambali advance amount was Rs. 21/= and was payable in three installments.
I remember the long queue of tea pickers going to work barefoot on misty mornings in Kampala, shielding themselves from the cold and rain. As I observed when I visited Sri Lanka, it has now been replaced by plastic sheeting.
