I think it would be good to clarify that Tailgate is nothing like any of these.
People often confuse “inspired by” and “similar to”. The most similar game to Tailgate would be Stray or Farewell North (but Tailgate was a year into development when I first played both);
For me as a narrative guy, inspirations often lie not in visuals or mechanics. It’s what kids call “vibe” these days (pun intended). These are narrative elements, tropes, cliches and motives.
In Half-life, you are wandering alone, occasionally meeting other folks that may or may not help you, but won’t do the job for you regardless. They will send you further or try to kill you.
In Nox, you are an unlikely hero, who just wants to back to his TV, but has to pass the trials, fix a TON of other peoples’s problems and defeat an evil sorceress to get back.
In Firewatch you won’t meet any people, the only person you interact with is Delilah, and you only do it via the radio.

My game is very (un)obviously inspired by:
– Firewatch
– Half-Life
– Nox
