Until now, if you lost or broke your phone, your Signal message history was *gone,* a real challenge for everyone whose most important conversations happen in Signal. So, with careful design and development, we’re rolling out opt-in secure backups. signal.org/blog/introducing-… Secure backups will let you save an archive of your Signal messages remotely in privacy-preserving form, refreshed every day. Now available in the latest Android beta release, rolling out to iOS and Desktop in the near future.

Will the backup server be open source and self host able? I will pay more for this feature.

Great, thank you :-) My signal iOS app is always growing and is getting 20-30Gb big. A feature to delete old data or big files/videos/pictures is missing. I know a lot of people with the same issue :)

Keep this opt-in please. This sounds like a slippery slope!

Any plans to update file size limit when sharing videos and files? Whatsapp is 2GB and telegram is also 2 GB

Couldn’t you just ask the CIA for a copy of your message history? What? What?

why use the cloud when I have linked devices that could sync with each other?

Do you remember the Paul Manafort case with "encrypted" Whatsup backup ? :-)

That's a great feature, one of my big annoyances was setting Signal up on a new device and only having new messages exchanged since the install. I hope you are working on a way Australians and others can keep using Signal when petty tyrants like the ALP come demanding you open up our communication to them.

Is this hosted with signal? Will there be an option to self host a backup file/folder?

Can a bad state actor turn it on and receive the backups, can they then extract messages, or use it to set up on another device and watch?

Glad to know. The lack of backups is the only reason why I’m not using Signal.

Not allowing for self hosted backups, instead charging for your cloud? Fuck off, you have lost me as a customer 🖕

Backups will be used in court… GOV PSYOP

The free tier includes 100 MiB of message storage then it's a paid subscription plan. I'm overloaded with subscriptions.

we would love to send messages on signal without internet connection, same as @jack Bitchat

At least allow us to save at protondrive or gdrive

Being as I'm always logged in on PC also, I can't see how this would be a serious issue. I'm in front of a PC 75% of the day, so rarely even use the app there. If my phone were broke or stolen, can't I just confirm login via desktop?

Sounds great! What would be great is to give people the option where they want to create their backups. Proton Drive, iCloud, directly on Signal Servers with a paid plan where don’t worry about anything or maybe even their own file server at home?

Love the new Secure Backups on @signalapp — but I hope the free storage limit can be expanded a bit. Even a small increase would help many of us keep our messages safe 🙏 #privacy
