Cathal, not the right message. We know scale of investment needed to deliver defence capacity. That’s accepted in Govt, but will take years to deliver. For now we should welcome an openness in Govt to partner with friends in Europe. Our security and EU security depends on it.

Irish Independance occurred on December 6, 1921, yet we can't control our territorial sea or sky. And yes, like Denmark, it's going to cost about nine billion per year. And don't get me started on how British Intelligence has complete penetration of our political structures.

I would tend to suggest that it would take years to deliver fighterjets..particularly if we don’t buy any?
2
"take years to deliver" reminds me of the events centre oh wait that's something that won't happen either

Belatedly, accepted, in Naval terms, Simon. Then, there’s air defence, in all its nothingness. Shambolic state of affairs. Indefensible.

PS. Portugal with a fraction of our GDP per capita and a nearly 50% smaller overall GDP has more people in its navy than we have in the entire defence forces. It has 35 warships. Including frigates and submarines. And 40 support vessels. Don’t start me on its Air Force.

Why should other states protect us when we refuse to protect ourselves, or them? States relative to Ireland have grown up policies and capable militaries. You went around the world looking for Brexit support. Now we wash our hands from what other states value, not our problem?

The Irish government spends more time talking about the Middle East, which it has no impact on, rather than focusing on Irish security and defence. Complete neglect and dereliction of duty.

"That’s accepted in Govt, but will take years to deliver. " You all had years to deliver what was needed and failed abysmally. You ignored security as you destroyed our Defence Forces.

Ansbacher Coveney a fucking fraud like his dad

Let our "friends" in Europe and their defence assets bail us out again after we rip them off for corporate tax generated in their economies

No it wouldn’t if we had competent people in gov. The only reason it will take so long is our gov is incompetent they cannot even build a hospital on budget.

It was your cabinet and administration from March 2011 that decided our ADRs could go to the wall-and weren't needed in 21st C. as per the cost cutting D of D policy implementation [sic]...then within a decade everything got a bit non-abstact, quite real, quite hybrid didn't it?

This pessimistic low-iq consultant thinking is why you’ve been pushed out of gov Saar Poovney. You’re irrelevant
So what are you going to do about this? The war in Ukraine has been going on since 1914. I think your government’s legacy in relation to defence will be worse than in relation to housing. Housing and defence are problems everywhere. Only Ireland fails in both.

@simoncoveney the government needs to defund immediately NGOs which could potentially delay investment in new defence capability acquisition, starting on Monday no sub committees or reviews, strong leadership is required now, no dithering or delay.

Ireland remain a security beggar for a decade even if you would start procurement right now. Takes time to deliver, recruited and train. Which you won't. Propably you wait for catastrophe to happen first. I hope someone has interest and capacity to help.

Other EU nations with less gdp have got lots done defence wise in a short period while Ireland has done nothing except put it on the long finger

Why will it take years to deliver? The country is overflowing with money for over 620 NGO’s but our sovereign wealth cannot be protected. We are a “fighting” nation but our Government hides behind a veil of stupidity. Cut out the Merkel legacy & take back our National Security

We could have followed the Germans' lead and gone full-on "Zeitenwende" at the start of the Ukrainian War when the commission on defence report was published. That would have given us every excuse to go full LOA3. Now we are paying LOA3 prices to stay stagnant at LOA1.
You & Leo were so obsessed with rainbow flagsyou failed to secure borders, you failed to pay attention to any national security. At one point during Brexit, Leo threatened them with forbidding the brits from Irish airspace. You deserve to be ruled by morons.
The National Radar was a priority on the DF white paper in 2016. And nothing done about it. Shame is the right message here. Action is the only answer. Discussion is the painful medication.
If you do then why are our gov giving away 15 million to the climate change scam and the corrupt aid agency in gaza that money should have been used as funding for our defence forces. Ireland comes first everyone is last.
Ireland people by large majority support our neutrality and we will never join a war mongering NATO or a war economy EU just giving profit to Arms companies, like Iceland we don't need an army just a coast guard!!!

You knew that years ago. But you preferred to shamelessly scrounge off Britain. And now you want to scrounge off the EU. Even the Vatican spends a higher % of GDP on defense. Comical little "country".
