My problem with people like Rasmussen is that they lack situational awareness of who they are or where they live.
Anyone advocating for European involvement in Ukraine is, first and foremost, ignorant, because they don’t understand the state of European military equipment, and also because they have no idea about Europe's industrial landscape or how much energy is required to sustain a weapons industry.
They might be aware of the difficulty, but their overconfidence blinds them.
After nearly four years of war, only the Czechs have had some success in delivering ammunition, after passing the burden around the world.
Besides that, today, Europe produces just over half of Russia’s artillery ammunition. Mark Rutte said this week that they had finally surpassed Russian production. He greatly exaggerated. In the second half of last year, production was between 400,000 and 600,000 shells. It’s impossible that they have now surpassed 3 to 3.5 million.
But ammunition is just a detail. Europe is not in a position to enter a war. There are no weapons or funds for that. What it really needs is to face a trade war to keep its industry and jobs competitive abroad.
A war now would be catastrophic for any kind of recovery. It would drown the continent in blood, scare away investors and tourists, nothing positive would come of it. And it would be a war with no winner because the Russians would likely call for mobilization, adopt a war economy, and go all in.
That’s my point with people like Rasmussen. It’s exactly this lack of awareness and arrogance that caused the Ukraine war, and these people never stop.
If Europe decides to send troops into Ukrainian territory, the chance of such a conflict escalating into something nuclear- and involving other countries- is very high.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen warns that Ukraine is heading into a ‘forever war’ unless Europe stops treating Russian aggression as background noise. Time to deploy a real air shield, send troops, freeze Russian assets and show Putin the cost of silence.
