The Tragedy of the USS Arizona: Minutes after being hit, a Japanese bomb penetrated the Arizona's deck and ignited the forward ammunition magazine. The resulting explosion was catastrophic. The ship sank in seconds, taking 1,177 of its crew deep down the sea.
The First Strike: A wave of 183 Japanese aircraft (torpedo planes, dive bombers, and fighters) struck the US Pacific Fleet, anchored at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack was totally unexpected. The primary targets? The eight massive battleships lined up on "Battleship Row."
