This is how men react to women having agency over themselves. Financial independence threatens control, and this is how control reacts to freedom.
The great irony is that the moment you say, “Alright, let’s follow that rule,” and choose a richer man to provide for you, you are suddenly a gold digger, because how dare you benefit from a system designed to keep you subservient.
Power makes them needed, and independence makes them disposable. But the control they want has to be on their terms, which is why even the right to alimony feels threatening.
