#OTD in 1963, The Beatles played the Royal Command Performance in London. Before closing their set, John requested: "For our last number I’d like to ask your help. The people in the cheaper seats clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewellery."

PETER WATKINS RIP John: (about the Bed-Ins) The thing that really struck it off was a letter we got from a guy called Peter Watkins who made a film called The War Game. It was a very long letter stating just what's happening – how the media is really controlled, how it's all run, and everything else that people really know deep-down. He said 'People in your position have a responsibility to use the media for world peace'. And we sat on the letter for about three weeks thinking 'Well, we're doing our best. All you need is love, man.' That letter just sort of sparked it all off. It was like getting your induction papers for peace! [interview during Bed-In] Yoko: Peter Watkins' letter was a confrontation to us, and at the time we had a conversation about what we felt we had been doing politically: “Well, I was doing this, Yes I was doing that.” As a Beatle, John was always asked, “What is your position about the Vietnam War” and their manager, Brian Epstein, was very concerned that they wouldn’t make any statements, and so they didn’t make any direct statements. But a covert statement was made through an album cover that was censored, as you know. And I was standing in Trafalgar Square, in a bag, for peace. So separately we had that awareness, and we were expressing it in the ways that we could. I was doing it more freely because it was easier for me. So we were comparing notes after getting the letter, and then we were saying, “Well what about doing something together,” which was the Bed-In (and the film Bed-In), so Peter Watkin’s letter definitely did mean something to us. theguardian.com/film/2025/no…

2 years ago, The Beatles released their final song 🥀
About You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, John said: "I’d started thinking about my own emotions. I don’t know when exactly it started... Instead of projecting myself into a situation, I would try to express what I felt about myself... I think it was Dylan who helped me realise that – not by any discussion or anything, but by hearing his work."
