If people with "unlimited" time off tried to take unlimited time off, they'd quickly discover what they actually have is "undefined" time off.

Wiping all annual leave - which Microsoft appears to be doing in April - will remove a huge debt load for the company. Lots of big companies would be envious of their announcement. Employees would be happy with the annual leave payout. Share price is responding positively. $MSFT

how are companies legally allowed to say their employees have "unlimited" days off? any company with such a policy is scamming their employees

I feel like even if you're given "unlimited" time off - corporate culture dictates whether or not employees feel "okay" to take them up on that offer.

How can you possibly get “a payout for any unused days” when you have an unlimited number of days? “Hi Microsoft, I’m leaving, give me UNLIMITED MONEY!”

Funny thing is, anyone that takes excessive PTO, they'll just reveal who they really are and it will make firing you much easier.

"When you have unlimited time off, you have no time off" I'm always cautious about things like this, hope it works out for the employees

This isn't as great as it sounds. Due to general workplace environments, most folks with unlimited PTO don't usually take as much time off as those who get PTO based on hours worked. This can be due to many factors, but this is never as good in practice as it seems to be on paper

“We need to talk about your unlimited PTO. You have taken 10 work days off this year. Brian over there has only taken 3. Some people choose to take less days off and we encourage that” piped.video/_ChQK8j6so8

I'm trying to understand what is implied with the term unlimited? Surely there is a limit to the total amount of time that can be taken off in a year?

I think most people in tech agree unlimited TO is just inherently worse. You never know HOW much time to take off, and it always leads to people thinking they are taking too much/too little.

it's easy to test whether this is true. just take every Friday off until they tell you otherwise. then ask what's the limit on unlimited

I am a bit conflicted about this. If you already have a generous vacation plan, this is actually a downgrade (you can no longer cash them out, or leave for a vacation at will). But if you were limited, yes. So good for Activision; But not so good for existing MS employees.

Unlimited PTO actually means no guaranteed PTO.

As someone who currently has DTO, and has used it to take 3+ weeks of vacation: it's a good thing, but it's gonna ultimately come down to the culture at the company and org that one is working in.

Wow, what amazing news for Microsoft employees! I'm so happy for them and excited to see how this change in policy impacts work-life balance.

I have this now at a different company. It’s not a positive thing. It allows them to fire you (or if you quit) without having to pay out any future pto accruals and also since you don’t have a set amount most ppl are hesitant to use it

unlimited PTO so your boss can guilt trip you whenver you try to take a vacation and there's no record of you having any vacation days. Smart.

#UnlimitedPTO is a total scam. Workers take less time off under this model. And companies only do it to keep from accruing a liability on their books. It may be the single most misunderstood "benefit" in HR.

I had a job with "unlimited PTO". The level of work was such that getting ANY vacation approved was a gamble. So when I see "unlimited PTO" being offered, what I hear is that there's so much work, they can do that because nobody will be able to take that much anyway

I've had Unlimited PTO at most agencies over the last few years and frankly if you don't take it, it's your fault. Get coverage for your work, talk to your manager and stop being scared. I have seen ZERO people get fired for taking too much PTO.

I’ve worked at company with unlimited PTO. There is peer pressure not to take to much vs a company where you are allowed x number of days and expected to use it.

I've worked for a company with 'unlimited' PTO and it was not a great environment.

Unlimited PTO is a scam. Good for employers, bad for workers. You don't accrue, can't really use as much as you want (it has to be approved), and you're intimidated into not using it. It's just a euphemism for stealing your vacation time.

Why would they have a payout for unused days if it's unlimited time off 👀

In other words, you can take time off if your manager approves and you can fit it into your work schedule (good luck with that). I'm not sure this is a win.

So they're eliminating time off and pressuring workers to always be on call, got it.

Unlimited PTO is a scam. If the company sets minimum that you have to take it can be beneficial, otherwise I've only seen it result in less PTO than basic accrual plans

Unlimited pto is a scam. It makes feel people feel guilty for taking it. If you have defined vacation hours the expire you use them guilt free. No mental effort to decide if you think you SHOULD go.
