Here's an insider's view of how the #TROPIC01 secure element gets provisioned.
So, what does provisioning actually mean? In simple terms, TROPIC01 does three main things:
๐ It uploads the firmware that controls the chip.
๐ It uploads proof of authenticity for each device that is made (you want to be sure that you are using a real TROPIC01, not a fake one).
๐ It uploads security-sensitive data that is important for TROPIC01 cryptography operations (generated and protected by the HSM on the manufacturing line).

After 3 days intensively programming secure elements this happens to my brain:
Hardware ontology: secure elements as carapace. A secure element is not an accessory; it is the exoskeleton that lets a device survive predation. Keys are non-extractableโborn inside, die insideโso only signatures, ECDH points, and AES blocks escape by design. Entropy is on tap: the TRNG irrigates the cryptographic metabolism because early-boot droughts are fatal. Counters are monotonic and time is securedโthe antidote to rollback and replay, a memory that does not negotiate. Attestation is the machineโs speech act: certificates and measurements stating, โThis is who I am; this is what Iโm running.โ Pattern of life is austere and precise: a Device Identity Key sealed in the SE that never leaves; an attestation chain (IDevID โ LDevID; voucher trails) that transfers ownership without meatspace rituals; and secure boot welded to hardware so each stage authenticates the next. Downgrade is treason. This is not UX; it is metabolism. Machines donโt type PINs. They present proofs, and the network either believes themโor they starve together.
