I just left court advocating on behalf of 26 U.S. Attorney candidates who have been denied the opportunity for a Senate hearing - effectively blocking their confirmation and blocking Congress’s ability to provide advice and consent. The continued invocation of blue slips, a tradition not a rule, demonstrates a politically motivated effort to impede the President’s constitutional authority to appoint U.S. Attorneys.
The President appoints individuals to carry out the mission of this administration and that mandate should be respected.
When millions of Americans voted for a change in leadership in November, they voted for a new direction. That choice should not be undermined by political obstruction in Congress or by criminal defendants.
To date, I have not had so much as a single conversation with New Jersey Senators, despite repeated outreach. That is not how the process should work in a functioning democracy. Still, that will not stop the Department of Justice from continuing the meaningful progress we’ve made under this administration.
Since my arrival, Newark has seen a 20% reduction in crime. Camden recently experienced its first summer in 50 years without a single homicide. These outcomes are not accidental, and these numbers do not lie. My office will continue to deliver real results for the citizens of this state and we are not slowing down. The mission is clear: to protect our communities, drive down violent crime, and hold accountable those who defraud, exploit, or abuse the public trust.
