Man a lot of people still not getting this. The original post states that if you can’t identify your character by silhouette alone it’s a failure. I’m saying it’s not. Yes there are characters in games with strong silhouettes that help legibility. Alongside colour and animation. People bring up TF2 and OW. Which are perfect examples of how the silhouettes, poses and colour all work to make the characters visually identifiable against each other. But they could be squares, circles and triangles and the effect for the player is the same. Identifying each one for gameplay. Any milsim game wouldn’t have an identifiable silhouette. They might have an identifiable pose though. Regardless, not having an identifiable silhouette does not make it failed design. Would any of you recognise Ghost from Call of Duty by silhouette? Probably not. Agent 47? A borderlands psycho? Soooo many anime games. You’d be really relying on the pose and an already strong familiarity. Below is not a strong silhouette. If you recognise it then it’s because you’re already familiar. By the original posts definition this would be a failed design. It’s not though.
