In the 40 Under 40s, money is not exchanged but papers reach out to companies and PR people put forward the folks they'd like to get some promotion for. (Often PR teams do this w/o the reach out even.) All quasi arbitrary.

"If you want to enjoy all the powerful benefits of this high quality feature online and in the print magazine there is a contribution fee of $300; if you would like to have your company considered for a Front Cover just let me know" Newspapers' 40 Under 40s aren't too different.
Wonder how your dentist, accountant, etc. ends up featured in magazines? "We would love to have you as a part of our magazine's section "Inspiring Professionals". We believe that you are the kind of professional our readers would deeply enjoy learning more about." (cont).

Our most popular #Linux Journal column for years was Hack and / by @kylerankin . He won the Readers' Choice Award over and over. He's currently in between gigs but won't be for long. Friends, if you need a #security, #privacy, or even #opensource expert, ping Kyle.
Ever wanted to hire me but wished, “If only he were smarter, with security expertise, more integrity, and better looking?” My friend @kylerankin is available for the 1st time since I've known him, & ticks all those boxes. Total #DreamTeam caliber guy. kylerank.in/about.html 1/2

New book by long-time Linux Journal editor @kylerankin. "How to Write a Tech Book", a step-by-step guide. (Near and dear to me: there is an entire chapter on how-to format code. Trust me, us publishers give bonus points to authors who can handle this.) lulu.com/spotlight/kyle_rank….

Cool kid project. (What kid doesn't like soldering?)
I have written a new product review for another wonderful @circuitmess kit. My son really enjoyed this one (as he has the rest). Check it out: koutoupis.com/2023/07/24/cir…

This clock by @kylerankin shows the passage of time by knitting a stitch every half hour-- a row every day. (At the end of a year he'll have a 365 row scarf.) The story involves zip ties, cron jobs, a #RaspberryPi, and more. Enjoy the read: kylerank.in/tempus_nectit/
