the real cycle of living you chase fullness like it’s hiding in every paperback, every receipt the books pile up, half-read, half-loved, evidence of all the lives you almost lived the story isn’t in finishing, it’s in the stack, the marks in the margin, the sun on your arm as you promise yourself this one will be different it never is, and that’s how you know you’re alive

Randomly read pp. 130-150 of the book when picking it up for the first time at the library/bookstore. Can't take your eyes off of it. It's an absolute banger. Take it home. Never read any other passage ever again.

your life will be determined more by the fragments you read than by whole texts. sip a little, but widely and you will turn yourself into a serendipity magnet

Sometimes you see a beat up scifi paperback. It's got a cool surreal artsy cover, the illustrator went nuts. But you get 1 chapter in and realize why nobody has heard of the author.

The fact that the books wait patiently and eagerly to be picked without lamenting makes me want to go out and buy another book today

All my unread books were rainy day books. Unread books are a source of comfort and security. One of these days you'll be bored and in need of something different, and your unread books will be there for you.

my version of this is going to my local library’s quarterly $10 bag sale where you fill up a giant paper bag with books for $10 cash, so you get 20-30 books every few months and have to buy multiple book shelves and then literally never read any of them ever 😭
