— Hitmen kidnapped and killed a journalist who warned that the Cabreras cartel were going to rob the gold mines to fund their defense against the incursion of the CJNG-Chapitos cartel into Durango. Mexico’s President Sheinbaum and Durango’s Governor Villegas have not acknowledged the murder of the journalist. And Harfuch has said the federal government won’t do anything to help investigate unless the Durango state government asks them to. The journalist Miguel Beltrán Martínez frequently wrote stories about local politics and cartel activity in Durango, a state which is heavily controlled by the Cabrera Sarabia brothers, who are allied with the Sinaloa Cartel - Mayito Flaco faction. Miguel's Facebook page was called La Gazzetta de Durango and his TikTok handle was @capodgo7. On October 21, 2025, Miguel made a TikTok video talking about the arrest of Cabreras cartel figure Leonardo Daniel Martinez Vega, alias “El Pato”. Miguel said the loss of Pato would weaken the Cabreras and that the CJNG- Chapitos alliance had begun to take over Cabreras territory in Durango. He specifically named Sierra mountains and the towns near the state capital as places where they had already gained a foothold. Miguel reported that, in an effort to reinforce their hitmen, Cabreras leader “José Luis Cabrera Sarabia, alias El 03, is ordering and directly participating in the theft of gold from mines in the state.” Miguel was last seen alive in the morning of October 23, by his son, who saw him leave their home in the Eucaliptos neighborhood of the state's capital to go to work. At some point after that, Miguel was kidnapped by cartel hitmen. On October 25, Miguel's dead body was found on the side of the freeway, near Río Chico. The injuries on his body suggested he had been held captive and tortured. The hitmen had left a narco message next to his body which read “for spreading lies about the people of Durango.” It's likely that naming Jose Luis Cabrera Sarabia as being directly involved in the theft of gold from Durango mines was the part of Miguel's video that upset the Cabreras the most. Cartel groups have been extorting and stealing from the mining companies for decades. But because the mining companies operating in Mexico are often foreign owned, there may be extra sensitivity around keeping the real name of the cartel boss away from the mining thefts. There are currently 76 gold mines in Durango and the state is Mexico's third largest mining hub. Mexico continues to be the deadliest country for reporters outside of active war zones.

(1/8) Since mid-October, the US has begun to increase its presence at CSL Comalapa in El Salvador. This has so far included the relocation of a P-8A and an AC-130J from Puerto Rico, with the addition of a USAF C-40. Very happy to have helped with this piece by @riley_mellen.

Breaking: A CBP agent was shot at near the Bridge of America Port of Entry in El Paso, Texas. Reports of a massive law enforcement response at both sides of the border (Mexican and US) in response to this shooting. Being told that the agent was not hit and sustained no injuries per anonymous law enforcement official.
Photo is old but the report is new and it states the Chinook reentered Mexican airspace briefly again today.
It's old news and it was due to the presence of drones.
