RIP James Watson (Apr 6 1928 - Nov 6 2025).
A brilliant mind and an unbreakable soul. He believed in truth, and in saying what he thought to be true, no matter the consequences. Even when the mob tore him down and took everything from him, he refused to recant.
It may be difficult to see now, but the simple, clear-eyed stance he took on the subject of biological human difference will prove to have been a crucial turning point in the historical development of the West. He became a modern Galileo muttering "E pur si muove" as he was cast out from the Cathedral for heresy. The pharisees could strip him of his positions and honors for blaspheming against racial equality, but they could not stop young men from witnessing their vicious persecution of this great man, which only drew the inquisitive mind's attention to the declaration that came to define Watson's twilight years: "I am inherently gloomy..."
His heroic example of intellect matched with moral courage will inspire young scientists for centuries to come. By refusing to bend the knee, Watson became more than a man: he became a symbol, and gained the kind of immortality that mere scientific discovery and professional success cannot confer.
James Watson won.
