I did not criticize the administration. My comments were pastoral, not political. I simply asked that detained Catholics have access to the sacraments—a request met with openness from federal officials.
New from me: Two bishops with ties to Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission, including Bishop Robert Barron, criticized the administration’s treatment of Catholics detained by immigration officials this week. nytimes.com/2025/11/06/us/tr…

Can you go back to doing Catholic movie reviews and things like that, teaching us how to view things through an interesting Catholic lens? And stop the ugly and undiscerning partisan political culture war stuff? There was a time when you were great, Bishop.

Yes, and that's appreciated But it bears asking, why wasn't this brave approach adopted toward non-criminal laypeople during COVID? Why were we refused sacraments? Why did our bishops aid in closing our churches well past Memorial Day 2020?

I do understand, Your Excellency. But if only Bishops had pushed to the same degree for their Catholic flocks to have had access to the sacraments during Covid, including those who were dying in hospital and even the final anointing was withheld while countless priests were denied entry to hospital floors at that time . And shouldn’t the sacrament of confession that brings spiritual and even physical healings be a prerequisite to receiving the Blessed Sacrament for anyone in a state of serious sin anyway, and not just numbers of the imprisoned? Thank you and God’s blessings.

Bishop Barron, I never criticized your involvement with the Religious Liberty Commission. However, your characterization of their response paints them in a positive light when they merely brushed you off. Who are you being pastoral to? It’s certainly not the detainees.

I must say: I wish you would’ve criticized the Administration, but I agree with your assessment: you didn’t criticize them.

Did the detainees not have access to the sacraments? Not sure what the legitimate reason is for staging a photo op and charging the gate entry, when a simple written or telephone request would suffice. That's the issue here.

Yes - thank you for speaking up for the detained faithful - the sacraments are especially important to the detainees during this time. Thank you for not allowing your words to be used for political fodder - many of which may be hostile to the Catholic faith and the Christian faith and just want to make political points.

Your Excellency, that was a warranted and helpful discussion. I believe @RealTomHoman, who is a devout Catholic and patriot, took your concerns to heart and made any appropriate adjustments to the federal criminal detention policy and process to allow detainees to receive the Sacraments of Penance and Reconciliation as well as the Eucharist.

Bishop Barron, In the now distant past most Catholics were very respectful of their Bishops and Completely Trusted them with the Spiritual Lives of their Families! Not anymore! When I encounter a Catholic Bishop the first thing that comes to my mind is to question is this Bishop a Far Left Homosexual! And it’s not just me! Nor is it my problem! The actions by Catholic Bishops are disgraceful and Despicable! Catholic Bishops are Aligning themselves politically with the Democratic Party, Promoting Homosexuality, downplaying Abortion, Persecuting Catholics who want to attend the Traditional Latin Mass and seek only money to pay for Clergy Sex Abuse!

“No merely human power can prohibit religious acts”(Dignitas Humanae 3); the baptised in good standing must be given access to holy communion & the sacraments (can. 213, 912); where moral order & state policy conflict we must “choose God over men” (CCC 2242). Which do you choose?

I frankly believe it would be more pastoral for you to address the illegal community about the Commandments they’ve violated by being here illegally: stealing and coveting come to mind. Also, their dishonesty in sneaking into our country and helping themselves to our services which taxpayers fund. Not to mention the criminal behavior that follows them everywhere they settle. Also, I’ve never heard a priest or bishop ever comment on the obligation these so-called Catholic illegals have to bring children into the world they can afford, and not use procreation as a paycheck via anchor babies. I’ve never heard a priest or a bishop talk to them about chastity and self control as regards this matter, those being Catholic positions. What about humility? They’ve behaved like entitled brats—which is what they are. Where’s the call to gratitude for our nation’s empathy all these years they’ve been flooding our country with third world people and attitudes, and carving their destructive paths? How about the immorality of assuming you can occupy a country as a non-citizen indefinitely and the hostile push back when that same country decides to enforce its laws? Lying about the intentions of said country (Nazis, racist, etc) and the officials who enforce the laws is slander and bearing false witness. And you say nothing about that. Then there’s the violence perpetrated upon officials by the illegal community and their supporters. I haven’t heard any bishop or priest call for that to subside. Illegals’ sins and immoral behavior are numerous, well-known and on full display. They ruin parishes and act like animals—I’ve witnessed this myself at multiple parishes across the country. And yet always the red carpet treatment while real Catholics who are citizens are marginalized. And you say nothing about these things. “He who has eyes to see, let him see, and he who has ears to hear, let him hear.” None of you can hide anymore. We see and we hear. And we know the agenda you serve. And we will fight it. So, with all due respect, this is not actually pastoral on your part and is most certainly a political stunt. You’re using the Eucharist to posture, just like everyone else is in this drama.

Thank you Bishop. Everyone deserves access to Christ, regardless of their circumstance. Jesus loves us more than we love ourselves. No exceptions. The migrants deserve our prayers as they have tough days ahead. I do believe they must be removed if they entered illegally.

Thank you Bp Barron for using your access to USG officials to advocate for decent treatment of detainees, especially receiving Holy Communion. USG prison officials should not deny to detainees what Aussies denied to Card Pell.

Sounds proper. Ideally detention is short enough that they can get the Sacraments in their home country. If longer, then chaplains need to be arranged, proper security and scheduled arrangements, etc
