Four years ago, I gathered all the evidence from an antisemitic attack against a bus full of Jewish teens celebrating Chanukah. The BBC fought it all the way. We ended up having to go all the way to the its Executive Complaints Unit and to the broadcast regulator Ofcom who validated our findings. But the damage was done. Lies travel halfway across the world before the truth can get its boots laced and validated by months-long bureaucratic processes of regulatory bodies. The misinformation ecosystem sustained by institutional bias and failing journalistic standards continues to poison public discourse, fuelling resentment, hatred, antisemitism, and xenophobia. Even now, BBC lifers are circling the wagons instead of learning from this moment. Much more will need to be done to change this culture. And much more will need to be done at other media outlets too.
