Michael William Hopkins, 28, was charged in Feb with theft and assault after stealing a laptop from south Mpls clinic and then assaulting/strangling a female staff member who tried to get the laptop back. He was tossed a plea deal agreeing to dismiss the assault charge by Asst HC Atty Haley-Rose Severson who also agreed to a stay-of-execution on the prison sentence (i.e. no prison). Hopkins was released on zero bail to await his fake sentencing by Judge Hilary L. Caligiuri. SHOCKER: He's back in custody for failure to cooperate with conditions of release while awaiting fake sentencing. Hopkins was tossed the plea deal despite having another open felony burglary case (that was whittled down to GM theft) and having just been convicted in December in a case where he made a false bomb threat to a St. Cloud hospital. This is our weak and failed @MNCourts system.

UPDATE on the fake sentencing of Michael William Hopkins, 28, who stole a laptop and assaulted a woman who tried to stop him. The assault charge was dismissed in a plea deal, and Hopkins was "sentenced" on July 6 by Judge Kerry Meyer to a stayed 1-year prison sentence and was spun out the door. SHOCKINGLY, Hopkins is back in custody on a warrant for violating probation in the case.馃檮

1000% Correct. We鈥檙e a society of criminals because there is no consequences whether it be laws or parenting.

No consequence for crime. The victims are vilified and have to go through a lot of emotional trauma, while the criminal is the victim and soothed and released to continue to do exactly what they always do. Rinse and repeat.

IDK. ~1990s, Legislature changed DA statutes to list strangulation as a felony, or at least an enhancement to felony level. So, in HennCo, a perfect stranger can walk up, steal your stuff, strangle you if you try to stop them, and they get strangulation charges tossed altogether?

I see all these cases where people are allowed to plea down to a lesser offense, then go on to commit more acts against others with no accountability. The public gets no info about the judges' information when voting time comes & many judges run un apposed.

Another liberal left Democrat prosecutor puts a dangerous violent predator back on the streets to attack innocent people. This is what you voted for, Minneapolis, and you deserve it. Dummies.

Don't pay a parking ticket, Judge 'Rose' would sign an arrest warrant, and you would- I'm not exaggerating- go to the booking jail and be processed. A mope strangles someone and walks, and will walk again. You are paying in every definition of the word. This is by design.

Think about it. A successful strangulation results in death. So this was nothing less than attempted murder. And he isn't even charged for that.

We need a post with the appropriate contacts to these prosecutors and judges. They need to hear the voice of citizens.

Your imaginary crusade about this is a crusade against the entire judicial system of the country. This is how it works. Are you arguing that we should bring back the stocks and pillory? What's your point??
