Michael William Hopkins, 28, was charged in Feb with theft and assault after stealing a laptop from south Mpls clinic and then assaulting/strangling a female staff member who tried to get the laptop back.
He was tossed a plea deal agreeing to dismiss the assault charge by Asst HC Atty Haley-Rose Severson who also agreed to a stay-of-execution on the prison sentence (i.e. no prison).
Hopkins was released on zero bail to await his fake sentencing by Judge Hilary L. Caligiuri.
SHOCKER: He's back in custody for failure to cooperate with conditions of release while awaiting fake sentencing.
Hopkins was tossed the plea deal despite having another open felony burglary case (that was whittled down to GM theft) and having just been convicted in December in a case where he made a false bomb threat to a St. Cloud hospital.
This is our weak and failed @MNCourts system.

UPDATE on the fake sentencing of Michael William Hopkins, 28, who stole a laptop and assaulted a woman who tried to stop him.
The assault charge was dismissed in a plea deal, and Hopkins was "sentenced" on July 6 by Judge Kerry Meyer to a stayed 1-year prison sentence and was spun out the door.
SHOCKINGLY, Hopkins is back in custody on a warrant for violating probation in the case.馃檮
