There is a middle ground. Never in humanity's history have we gone backwards, nor stopped progress. But what we can do is bring our collective human wisdom and ideal values to build new systems for the future that ensure a peaceful and prosperous society. I outline the roadmap to get there in my book, "Being Human in the Age of AI". It provides a hopeful and optimistic vision for the future and the pragmatic steps we need to take to get there.
