Here’s a writing tip that has blown me away recently:
You might already know that you should write to one person.
But who that person is can dramatically change your content. I’ve always said the best person to write to is the person you used to be—to serve your shadow.
But recently, for my newsletter, I changed my ‘target’.
To who?
My kids.
Now, I don’t have kids, but hear me out.
I wanted to write essays that tackled deep problems on my mind. I wanted them to stand the test the time. And I wanted not to be a pussy when I write and hedge my bets.
I realised that if I wrote essays for my kids, I wouldn’t yap on about surface-level marketing tactics.
I would share deeply personal stories with ideas to support my strongest beliefs.
And ever since, my writing has become much deeper.
My audience has been responding better.
And my curiosity has been firing in different directions. Because now, there’s an even deeper purpose behind posting.
I’m not sure how long this series will last. But it’s the most motivated I’ve felt to take my writing seriously.
So if you’re looking for a new strategy to communicate more persuasively…
Write stuff you’d be proud to read to your kids.
Because at one point, they will be reading.
And what you say now can change how they think later.
