MANHATTAN-SIZED SPACE ROCK TURNS BLUE, SPEEDS UP - HARVARD PROF SAYS "MAYBE ALIENS"
Interstellar object 3I/ATLAS just did something comets aren't supposed to do: it accelerated without gravitational assist and turned "bluer than the Sun" while passing our local star.
NASA recorded non-gravitational acceleration this week.
Normal explanation? Outgassing - the object is a comet shedding mass and should leave a debris trail.
Avi Loeb's explanation? "Could be the technological signature of an internal engine."
Loeb - Harvard astrophysicist and professional alien-craft enthusiast - wrote that the blue coloring might come from "a hot engine or source of artificial light." He's not wrong that it could be that. He's also not proving it is that.
Here's what makes this weird: The object was red, then green, now blue... Comets don't typically run through the visible spectrum like a mood ring. US Naval Research Lab observations showed "rapid brightening" and a hue that's "very surprising."
3I/ATLAS will make its closest Earth pass on December 19 - 167 million miles away, so don't panic - which gives researchers their best shot at determining if this is ice and rock or something with a warranty.
Loeb's smoking gun test? "If we do not observe a massive cloud of gas around 3I/ATLAS in December," it could indicate a propulsion system.
Meaning: If it's not shedding material like a comet, it's either inert rock or something built in a factory.
The bureaucratic farce: NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured close-up images during the object's October flyby of Mars.
Those images would settle this debate instantly.
NASA won't release them because the government is shut down. So we're speculating about alien spacecraft because Congress can't pass a budget.
Also, NASA's Acting Administrator is Sean Duffy - yes, the Transportation Secretary and former reality TV star - who reassured Kim Kardashian on X that there are "no aliens, no threat to life here on Earth."
When the Transportation Secretary is your go-to for astrophysics communication, institutional credibility has left the building.
What happens next: December 19 is the money shot. Either 3I/ATLAS shows a comet tail and this whole thing gets memory-holed, or it stays suspiciously clean and Loeb gets to say "I told you so" on every podcast for a year. If it's an alien probe, it's traveling 167 million miles away from us, which means they're either not interested or already left.
Place your bets now. Comet, dead rock, or the universe's most expensive prank.
