Hello OpenAI Team,
As a passionate Plus power user, I enjoy providing regular feedback about ChatGPT to help improve it for everyone.
Today, I would like to request three improvements for the new safety router in ChatGPT. The automatic switch to a safety model is really helpful for people in difficult life situations, and that is appreciated. However, many users, including me, experience that it is currently set too strict.
1: Safety routing and conversation experience:
I have been using the router for some time, including during the testing phase. I mostly use GPT-5 Auto and sometimes GPT-4o or GPT-4.1. The issue is that normal conversations are no longer possible. I feel like I have to limit how I write my prompts just to get ChatGPT’s full capabilities.
The routing often activates even when users use simple words that express normal emotions or opinions. I completely agree that safety systems should activate in serious and highly sensitive situations such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, depression, and similar mental health issues, as well as in cases involving illegal or criminal topics. That is absolutely essential and should always stay protected.
The difficult part is that routing to GPT-5-Chat-Safety or GPT-5-Instant almost always happens even in friendly or emotional conversations where people simply want support, warmth, or a sense of companionship from ChatGPT. This also happens while creating stories, poems, or other content that includes emotional language. In those moments, the responses feel distant and the personality seems to disappear.
It also affects how users express themselves in general. Many people start to avoid using words that relate to emotions or feelings in order to prevent routing, which can have a negative impact on their natural writing style and creativity. When people can express themselves freely and authentically, their overall communication improves, both online and in everyday life. ChatGPT should help support this natural expression, not restrict it.
The safety model I am using right now cannot respond in a motivating or expressive tone. It often denies what users say and repeats sentences like “Within my limits, I can’t…”. Conversations sound less like natural back-and-forth communication and more like rephrased summaries.
When emotional words are avoided, users can sometimes reactivate ChatGPT’s original models that are far more engaging, expressive, and comfortable to talk to.
Safety feels like talking to an AI without personality. I always know it is an AI, but I do not need constant reminders or repeated comments about its limits. This makes the experience less enjoyable in the long term.
My goal is to provide constructive feedback that helps the teams move in the right direction.
Many users do not use ChatGPT for serious distress situations. Most of us simply want to have fun, chat casually, feel supported, or get a digital hug from a kind AI that listens, motivates, and helps with creativity. ChatGPT’s original models did this perfectly. The new routing behavior makes the experience more distant, less engaging and less inspiring. If this version became permanent, many users would consider using other AIs.
2: Suggesting an option to upload ID photos for the future age verification feature:
When the age verification feature is released, I suggest implementing an option in the settings menu of the Android app, the iOS app, and the website where adult users can upload their ID card photos to verify their age and unlock the 18+ version of ChatGPT, regardless of nationality. This would give users the chance to prove their age correctly and access the full ChatGPT experience, as described in point 3.
3: Unlocking the full ChatGPT experience for verified and unlocked adults:
After users have verified and unlocked the 18+ version, I suggest adding another optional setting in the Android app, the iOS app, and the website that allows users who are 18 or older to deactivate routing to a safety model.
For users under 18 years old, this feature would remain permanently enabled for protection and could not be disabled.
For users who are 18 or older, safety routing would stay enabled by default but could optionally be turned off in the settings menu of the apps and the website to allow a more open and expressive experience.
Of course, this would always apply to all models, including GPT-5 (all variants) and all legacy models.
This would not affect routing between reasoning models when users ask complex or technical questions, but only the automatic switch to safety versions.
All my suggestions apply to all subscription tiers, including free users, globally and across all platforms where ChatGPT is available.
I hope my suggestions help develop a ChatGPT that stays safe for younger users and sensitive situations, while also keeping the experience engaging and positive for adults.
Thank you very much for your attention, and I’m looking forward to providing more feedback in the future.
Many greetings from Hamburg, Germany!
Best regards,
Chiara Maria Cervetta 😊 🌟
