Democrats are fighting so hard not just because the Covid-era 'emergency' subsidies are scheduled to expire, but because at the same time Obamacare premium prices, on their own, are increasing substantially. Some Democrats have even admitted the failure of the Affordable Care Act to make health coverage more affordable. Allowing the 'emergency' subsidies to expire--which every single Democrat voted to do back in 2022--at the same time rates are skyrocketing would be a serious blow to public confidence in the ACA. Remember, the ACA is the premier Democratic policy achievement of the last half-century. They will do anything to keep it afloat, even as it consumes more and more taxpayer money.

I think if you want to understand what the minority of senate Dems who are supporting this deal are thinking, you actually do have to set the politics aside — they are concerned about the harm the shutdown is doing and high-mindedly want to bring it to an end.
Running people like Talarico is a way to take away that excuse but stupid sloppiness all around ruins the play. The Democratic Party is supposed to be in the business of winning elections and business is so bad that everyone in the company from the top-down should be on PIPs.
