Today I testified on behalf of @immcouncil in front of House Homeland's Border Security and Enforcement subcommittee. I testified about how Trump's diversion of thousands of law enforcement officers to mass deportation work is making us less safe. Watch my opening statement here.

instead of introducing 50 year mortgages, how about we just build more housing in the places people want to live — and find ways to make that housing more affordable, such as, and for example, not deport people who build our housing or impose tariffs on building materials.

Another photo from today in Little Village and Cicero: Agents pointed guns out of their car windows at civilians and members of the media, including two Tribune photographers, as they roamed around the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the shooter who allegedly targeted Border Patrol agents remains at large. The Department of Homeland Security did not specify which agency is investigating the attack. Bovino said on X that between five and seven shots were fired "directly" at his agents. Photo taken by @briancassella. Read the full story: chicagotribune.com/2025/11/0…

Bovino went into popular Carniceria Aguascalientes in heart of Little Village. “They said they were just here to buy something,” said Elizabeth Gutierrez. “I told them we wouldn’t serve them and escorted them out. Bovino seemed upset, but I don’t care.” chicagotribune.com/2025/11/0…

A crazy day in Little Village: A report of someone shooting at federal agents, fortunately no one was hit. The Feds pepper allegedly sprayed an infant. A cop was hit by a car. And Bovino threatened to tear gas angry residents. Story from @chicagotribune chicagotribune.com/2025/11/0…

Border Patrol agents went to Little Village and Cicero for the second time this week in what residents described as a “show of force” and a possible act of retaliation following a recent court order restricting the agency’s use of force against protesters. The agents were once again met with angry residents demanding that they leave and were denied service at a Mexican restaurant near the iconic arch. According to DHS, shots were fired at agents during one of the confrontations, but did not provide further details of which agency is investigating. CPD was also at the scene. There were also reports of tear gas and flash bangs sickening nearby kids during different stops. This is a developing story. chicagotribune.com/2025/11/0…
This is simultaneously cringe Boomer Facebook slop and also pretty deranged stuff for a government agency to post.

Sure! I think Noem’s actions in terminating TPS for several of the countries which have lost it have been unlawful. I think the decision violates the APA as it was arbitrary and capricious and pretextual. I also think some of the terminations were unlawfully motivated by animus.
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
And in that mouthful, you insinuate that Noems actions are illegal. So say it.

The Supreme Court has not “ruled” on these cases in a traditional way. They granted DOJ’s request to halt the court orders against them, but offered no explanation as to why — and one possible reason is that Congress limited lawsuits around TPS, not that what Noem did was legal.
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
You're a lawyer with no understanding of Supreme Court rulings? Um, what war exactly is Venezuela involved in?

If someone says “You can stay at my house temporarily until the hurricane passes,” do you think that means they can kick you out in the middle of the storm because “temporary means temporary”?
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
TPS, it's very definition is "temporary" protective status

This guy’s heartbreak is going to stick with me for a long while. Love knows no borders.
"A man ran to the Broadview ICE facility today searching for his wife of five years. They were following the legal process, showing up for her court case, when ICE took her to another room and disappeared her. He tracked her phone to Broadview where the signal cut off. Police told him to just look up her name online. He sat in a parking lot weeping, confused, with no answers." 🥹😭👇

I swear to god the crazy numbers that people throw out for the undocumented population keep going up and up. 80 million would be almost 1 in every 4 people in the country!
More wild we have 60-80 million illegals in America, whose existence disenfranchises Americans.

I have no common cause with tankies. 8 million people have been forced to leave Venezuela in the last decade. The US has done less to help those victims of Maduro than multiple other countries in the Hemisphere.

Your Bluesky friends are really not going to appreciate your casting aspersions on Maduro/Chavez

What part of “until conditions improve” do you not understand about “temporary”? Do you think 4 years is permanent? If a war hasn’t ended in a short period of time, should we just deport people into an active war zone because “temporary means temporary”?
TPS. The “T” stands for temporary, Temporary means not permanent.

Again, “temporary” under the law means until the emergency which led to the grant of TPS is over. Ukraine has had TPS since the war began in 2022. Should Trump arbitrarily terminate TPS now because the war is still ongoing in 2025 and you think 3 years of TPS is too long?
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
“Temporary” now means “forever”, it seems. Misuse of, or abusing, the system is in action again.

Secretary Noem didn’t determine that country conditions in Venezuela had improved. She determined that granting TPS was now “contrary to the national interest” and thus should be terminated *despite* the fact that conditions have not improved. This rationale was a clear pretext.
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
The Secretary did that. The determination was challenged, but so far SCOTUS has sided with Trump. x.com/i/grok/share/3xtCAbMlx…

First off, TPS is about whether people should be *deported,* not whether they should be *admitted.* Second, you’re basically saying that people have no right to flee a dictator; that Jews in the 1930s should have stayed in Germany and “done something to solve those problems.”
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
What don’t you understand? If the people of Venezuela get to run off to the United States to escape their problems then the likelihood of them instead doing something to solve those problems decreases. We solve NO problem by allowing this.

He has withdrawn any objection to that and is now actively fighting to be sent there. You are clearly not up to speed on the latest in the case. And I can personally vouch for his lawyers; they are phenomenal, some of the best you could get. Trust me, they know better than you.
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
He claimed persecution there also. Once again, not smart to use attorneys that do not have your best interests at heart. If you are not paying them, then do not trust them unless they are public defenders.

The word “temporary” means until the conditions that led the designation no longer exist. Are you seriously suggesting that conditions in Venezuela are better today than they were in 2021 when Trump granted protections?
Replying to @ReichlinMelnick
Hence the word “temporary.” Maybe these people should go back to their own country and strive to improve it. Must American taxpayers solve EVERY problem in the world?
