Dungeon Mastering goes 3D in our Worldsmithing system! Horribly ugly demo below. For decades, games like Neverwinter Nights built thriving communities with beloved campaign creation tools, adding years of replayability. At the same time, setbacks like Neverwinter retiring its Foundry in 2019 and Wizards’ shelved Sigil project show there’s room to do better. We love the third-party modding scene around D&D, but we think creators deserve first-class support that’s built into the game... so your tools live where your adventures do. Enter Worldsmithing. Think Minecraft's creative mode, except you're placing curated 3D assets instead of blocks. Place, rotate, move, shrink/enlarge, undo, set triggers and trips -- whatever you need to build a campaign. Then preview it by walking through the scene just like your party will. We'll offer this in two modes: - Creator mode, where you have a private instance with infinite assets for building your own campaigns to invite your friends - Worldsmith mode, where you can earn the ability to create and edit in the public game world (but watch out, your assets might be destructible by other players!) This feature is a few days old in a game codebase that's a few weeks old, so forgive the rough edges-- but hopefully you can see where we're going with it. We'll be using this system internally to build the main MMO zones, so we have a strong incentive to improve it! What would you like to create?

Episode 194: The Trillion-Dollar Question What percentage of global AI workloads in 2030 will run on Apple silicon? ChatGPT Pro thinks the range could be anywhere from 7% to 35%, depending in part on how broadly its edge inference APIs are adopted by developers. We've got a few things to say about that. We demo agentic search through a codebase using nothing but Apple's on-device Foundation Models API. It works-- even while offline. It's local and private with a marginal cost of zero. How far can we take this? What percentage of coding agent workloads can shift from cloud to the edge? We are about to find out.
Episode 193: Codex & Claude Code On Your Phone Introducing the OpenAgents Tricoder mobile app, enabling developers to easily use OpenAI Codex and Claude Code from their phone, anywhere in the world. The app is live now in TestFlight, coming soon for Android, and 100% open-source under Apache 2. How it works: 1. Download the app 2. Run a single npx command from your desktop and get a pairing QR code 3. Scan the QR code from the app and start chatting "I'm excited for developers to experience what I experienced last week, where I had probably my single greatest daily increase in my own personal productivity just getting this working, walking around my house and talking to it." Pairing devices can be done in either of two ways: 1. Local network -- Direct pairing over wifi, no accounts needed. Devices must stay nearby on the same network 2. @Tailscale VPN -- Enables you to stay connected anywhere. Leave your desktop on at home, use the mobile app from the grocery store. Just needs a free install of Tailscale on both devices. (Support for other VPNs coming soon) The desktop bridge communicates with Claude Code and Codex via the amazing new Agent Client Protocol from @zeddotdev. We'll add support soon for @opencode and other agents as users request them. Please forgive its very basic UI and inevitable bugs. The codebase is just <1 week old but now that the hard parts are done, we'll be rapidly adding features and polish based on user feedback. For now this app can be a nice supplement to your desktop coding work. Over the coming months, we're excited to explore replacing old-fashioned IDEs altogether. Much more to come. Please send us feedback-- and stay tuned! - Website: openagents.com - Docs: docs.openagents.com - GitHub: github.com/OpenAgentsInc/ope… - Join TestFlight: testflight.apple.com/join/dv…
Don't worry, we'll fix everything 😇 Check back in three years 👍
Are MMOs done? No bait, I'll weigh in as the team lead for OG WoW. LOTR cancelled, New Worlds sunset. I don't think they are. I warned devs at GDC to stop copying the WoW forumula after they invited me to talk about the making of WoW on a panel. I tried to tell them that before WoW, there were SO MANY different types of MMOs. It was the wild west and there are so many different games trying different things. We just picked the EQ model because we liked it the best, and then polished it and made it mass market. But we also were really interested in making a Battlefield MMO, or a Sim MMO, and others. It wasn't that WoW had the RIGHT formula to make MMOs work. It's that we invested the time and mental energy into taking the EverQuest formula and make it right, with tons of Blizzard polish, and eliminating the frustrating moments. That can still be done. Stop making MMOs about fantasy settings with leveling, zones and dungeon raids. I'm convinced there are still good ideas out there.

Episode 192: OpenAgents Upgrades Itself We ask the OpenAgents Tricoder app to edit its own code. It commands @OpenAI Codex over websockets via @Tailscale, updating the app over-the-air via React Native @expo-updates. Works! No coding or IDE necessary. Shall we automate this?

This build works on the web now 👍 ruinsofatlantis.com/play (allow ~10 secs for first load; doesn't work on mobile)

For character controller we're aiming for it to feel like: - 80% classic tab-target MMO, with WASD movement similar to EQ/WoW - 20% action combat with a dash of inspiration from Neverwinter online Welikes the balance struck by the Ghost MMO where usually you'd use tab target but if you use spells without a target it will automatically target whatever is closest to you. You can try an extremely early version of this now in v0.0.2 at ruinsofatlantis.com/play Shout-out to @quaternius for the 3D model and animations 🙏

An MMO where you can just face roll to end game and feel powerful the whole way, sucks. Character growth, grinding and mechanic learning is just as important as what happens at end game. If an MMO treats you like your character is important at moment one loses appeal to me

Challenge accepted!
I’m starting to accept that there may never be another MMO that will enthrall me like vanilla World of Warcraft did in 2004.

You must be able to destroy buildings! Especially from dragonback! We are building this.

This past week was massive. We added: - New character controller with walk/run animations - Entity-component system - Mana system - Magic Missile homing - Wizard NPCs can now cast all 3 spells - Switched from client-only to server-authoritative - Voxel destruction: fireball blows hole in voxel building Not yet ready for a v0.0.2 web build so going to kick that to next week but you're welcome to explore the GitHub repo & try a local build (it will be buggy & janky until next week): github.com/OpenAgentsInc/rui… We are really leaning into player DESTRUCTION (see p@treon link below) and CREATION (stay tuned next week's update). Goal is to let players do way more than all other MMORPGs have to date. I want to rain fire on enemy cities from dragonback!
