Flight of the Navigator (1986) captures that perfect mix of wonder and mystery that defined 80s sci-fi. A kid, a spaceship, and a sense of adventure that feels pure and timeless. Its practical effects still hold up beautifully today.

This movie plus Short Circuit is probably why I like AI so much.

I'm surprised to realize that I've somehow never seen this. I was a video store clerk for years in the 90s and watched everything possible. Not just to be a buff, but I wanted to go to film school. And I actually did for 2 years (animation at UArts) before switching to design.

Great film up to the point of the aliens looking so stupid.

Love this movie, saw it in theaters at the time it came out. However this is one of those movies that perpetuated the absolute LIE that "we only use 10% of our brains" and the myth endures...

It's still in that genre of Disney shithead kids that maguffin their way to being cool

Agreed!🛸👽🥏"Well, now, that all depends. Do you want New Coke, Classic Coke, Cherry Coke, Diet Coke, or Caffeine-Free Coke?" That classic line makes me laugh even harder today (so many products with an ever expanding list of choices).

the most underrated movie in history
Two years before the release of this movie a close relative took me for a day tour through wright pat. He was a senior staff officer. I was ten. My mom said I was obsessed with aircraft and everything sc-fi /ufo since this visit. I see the navigator craft in my dreams.

I really liked this one on VHS as a kid. Was surprised to learn later that it was considered a flop (see also: The Last Starfighter)
