Sad story but the law is the law here Indiana law (Indiana Code § 35-41-3-2) includes a Castle Doctrine, giving people the legal right to use reasonable — even deadly — force to defend themselves, their family, or their property when they believe an imminent threat exists.
Do you think the homeowner should be charged or not⁉️ Authorities are deciding whether to charge an Indiana homeowner who shot and killed a 32-year-old woman working as a house cleaner after she mistakenly went to the wrong home on November 5, 2025. Officers found Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velasquez dead on a front porch in Whitestown just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. According to investigators, Rios Perez was part of a cleaning crew that had gone to the wrong address in the Heritage subdivision. Her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, told WRTV that the couple had been cleaning homes for about seven months. He said he was standing beside his wife at the door when the homeowner opened fire through the closed front door. Velazquez said he didn’t realize she had been shot until she collapsed into his arms. Police have not identified the homeowner involved in the shooting. Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood said deciding whether to file charges will not be simple. Eastwood noted that the case could hinge on Indiana’s castle doctrine law, which allows residents to use reasonable - even deadly - force if they believe someone is unlawfully entering their home.

Not sure how someone knocking on your front door would make you believe an imminent threat exists

People are maniacs. Shooting through the door without saying a word is not the answer.

One thing I have not heard anyone add yet is Indianapolis is basically the new Gary, IN and I would imagine people in nice neighborhoods are not too happy about it.

It’s not reasonable to believe you are in danger because someone knocks on your door.

What is the threat here? A duster? A vacuum?

They're going to jail.

They were just knocking on the door though.

I dont see how you got dudes who are badass enough to say they have no problem with killing under the right circumstances but would be scared for their lives by a knock on the door ? There is no way in hell theyd threaten someone's life they believed was a client , through the door. I havent seen one reply question the sanity or competence of the shooter. Just people doing gymnastics to figure how murdering a woman through a closed door is justified.

If it's something like the cleaners knocked and waited for a response and just got shot at I would call that murder, there's absolutely no reasonable threat from that. But if it's some other circumstances it might be justified.

People get convicted for shooting through closed doors all the time. Even cops. Self defense laws hinge on the reasonable person standard. It’s not reasonable to believe 2 people standing on the doorstep in the middle of the day is an imminent threat (if that was the case here)

Change the law immediately then There is no universe where it makes sense for people to be able to murder anyone that is at their door

How about maybe next time; Homeowner: Can I help you? (With firearm at the ready if you’re really that paranoid). Couple: Hi, we’re here to clean your house. Homeowner; You have the wrong address. Oops! Sorry. Have a nice day! The end.
